What are some of the most tasty tomatoes that are available by seed?
I don't really care about size or number of fruit, just the taste.
Can you name a few?

I read that "Brandywine" is the best flavor...but come across tomato growers that say their tongues/taste buds didn't stand up to it.

I read Cherokee Purple is a really delicious Black Heirloom...but it has a smokey flavor.

I like San Marzano's (a Roma type) and I have read tons and tons of feedback where growers dislike the seed.

A local grower gave me a about 5 perfect tomatoes, much bigger than a softball in 09'....very big and very silky/tastey. I am still waiting on the name/variety of it...I think it's his own concoction, but we'll see...I have never been able to compare it to anything online that I've seen...but it may be something simple.

On a 0 to 10 scale, the average store bought tomato is a 5 and the average garden grown, vine ripened tomato is a 9. The best tomato is a 10, but, I am not hedonistic enough to care and I suggest that you do the same.

I'm planning on planting several more of Burpee's Napa Hybrid grape tomatoes this spring -- the taste is amazing and the plants produced heavily, even in the late-summer heat.

A little plastic basket of grape tomatoes goes for three or four dollars, so it's really nice to be able to go outside near dinner time and collect that day's ripe grape tomatoes for only the cost of some water and your time.

They're dinky, and not bragging type tomatoes, but they sure taste good.

I think my taste buds must share a gene or two with Lee (uh, that sounds kind of icky) as my first three favorites are the same as his/hers. Will have to try the Stokes and Spears varieties as have not grown them before.

If you have never grown a Sun Gold cherry tomato, you are missing an amazing treat!

BTW, what's with the negative comments here? Relax, think about the summer's first perfectly ripe tomato and say, ahhhhh.

With zen-like calm,

Rain

Yellow Pear tomatoes.

That was a joke since this is my first year growing anything other than Home Depot type Celebrity tomatoes...I'm not killing off my seedlings yet though, who know..my Texas soil might make them taste delicious.

I was surprised by the flavor of Bloody Butcher after growing it for the first time last year, it has a certain "je ne sais quoi.":-) (I don't know what)- yummy

Bicolors- Lucky Cross, Marvel Striped, succulent, meaty, tasty
Hearts- Ukraine, Verna's Orange Oxheart, succulent, fruity
Paste- Heidi, Tegucigalpa- great texture, taste
Gogosha- large pink, great yields, succulent, tasty

Traded tomato, supposedly Roughwood Golden Plum but turned out to be a flattened round golden tomato, with a good fruity flavor.

Great no-blemish round red tomatoes last year, satisfying tomato flavor- Nepal, Jetsetter, Legend

Still on my quest to find "the" tomato (aren't we all?)... but so far my personal favorite is German Pink. They never produce enough to warrant a great deal of precious garden space, but when a nice one ripens up, it always goes right on my (thick sliced!) bologna sammich, just a pinch of salt, and no mayo needed.
