2009 Tomato Photos

At the time of writing this, some of us have started seeds and some of us are still waiting to start them. So I thought I should start this thread that will hopefully last through the season.

Post photos here of your tomato plants from seed to first frost, or anywhere in between. I noticed that I like to look through threads that have lots of pictures - so why not start a thread early in the year where we can post pics all year of our tomatoes and share experiences? If all goes well, by the end of the year, we'll have an extensive gallery of many tomatoes in their many stages of growth.

For those who don't know how to post a photo - First, upload your picture to a sever such as Photobucket, Flickr, etc. Copy the URL to your image (should start with http://). Then post this in the body of your reply message:

<img src="http://www.example.com/myimage.jpg">;

Of course, you replace my example.com address with the URL of the image.

I hope this turns out well - I'm sure we all want to see pics of each other's tomatoes...

I'll start with a photo of each of my grow lights and the seeds started under them.

{{gwi:1297409}}
{{gwi:1297411}}

Now post your pics...come back every now and then to post updates.. Good luck to everyone with your 2009 gardens!

    Cindeea,

    You have Dr. Carolyn's! I am growing these this year and am excited for these and a couple other varieties.

    How do those Dr. Carolyn's taste? Give us a review on the taste and anything about those types of plants too....

    Great pictures everyone

    If this thread eventually gets too long, I can start a Part 2 either here or in the gallery (depending on which gets more traffic).

    Hi Alamo, not sure where Cindee is but she and another Florida gardener turned me on to the Dr. Carolyn's. I grew them this past fall for the first time, didn't take a single picture of them but wish I had. Very productive indeterminate cherry with wonderful taste, the boss (my wife) has demanded I start some for late spring through the summer as she love the taste and it appears to be one of the few cherries we can actually grow here through the summer here.

    catman529 what kind of light is that? what is the setting? i have a shop light over a work table i was thinking i could use that for my seedlings

    I'm using a cheap 4' shop light fixture from Walmart. I have 2 of these fixtures and each has 2 GE "Plant & Aquarium" tubes in it. These tubes are supposed to produce light high in reds and blues which plants need to photosynthesize. So far they are working well.

  • watboy

    thanks catman, i'm not sure if what I got will work or not.I don't even know the type of tube that is in there. it was there when i moved in. how do i find out?

    You probably have a regular cool white tubes; you can use these to grow plants as well. But if you want the P&A tube, just go to Walmart and buy a couple to replace the tubes you already have.

    Great pics Brian, and jleiwig, I know what it's like waiting to plant seeds..I started mine at the earliest recommended date.

    When this thread gets too long I'll start a Part 2, and maybe a Part 3 later in the summer, depending on how popular it gets and how many pictures are posted.

    Catman,
    Is this one that you transplanted? I'd be afraid of damaging the roots, or is it just one you had to cull.

    That's a transplant, yes. I know the roots took some stress. But the plants look fine and started growing very soon after they were transplanted. Haven't had any die-offs except for the ones I culled ;)

  • bdobs
    15 years ago

    They sure can take a lot of abuse. When I transplanted from peet pellets, I ripped the netting off along with lots of roots and they did just fine

    Here is my 4 week update.
    They seem to be doing quite well. Not sure if they are small, large or average for four weeks.
    Maybe on the small size as they are growing in cold conditions

    Here is my lighting setup in the kitchen closet. It stays pretty warm inside since the furnace ducts run through the left corner of the closet. I am afraid my containers may be too wide and not deep enough, however everything else is doing well. Has anyone else used coffee cans to grow in?

    I can just taste those maters on a BLT hmmmmmmmm Everything is looking great for you. I'm behind on an early plant out due to Mother Nature and Mr/Mrs Stick fingers walking off with all my mature seedlings but I can make more and in doing so they will be produciting maters latter in Late May or early June. Won't catch up with you but atleast we will enjoy maters togetherr in the Summer.

    Hello, i am new here...and started my tomatoes about 3 weeks ago, they took a week to germinate, and they still dont have ANY true leaves. after looking at everyone elses tomatoes, i dont understand why they havent gotten any leaves yet?? i did pot-up some of them because they were getting really tall and their little roots were poking through the bottom of the cups (i put them in too small of containers-oops!) they look really healthy, with big cotyldons (spelling?) and strong stems, but i dont think it is because i transplanted them that they dont have leaves, because even the ones still in the little cups dont have anything yet.

    my set up: just kept them covered and in a back room (stayed about 70 in there all the time) and once they germinated put them in a sunny window. i know i said that tehy were tall, and i am sure a lot of you are saying well they are leggy because of too little light, but they arent leggy, just too big for the little cups i was using.

    p.s. the ones i transplanted are looking really good, dark leaves and thicker stems...i just dont know if they are "behind" or what. kind of frustrating, lol.

    Ok I do not know what I am doing wrong, I copied the instructions above, but still all I get are little boxes with a red dot. Can someone please tell me how to get my pictures from flickr to here, I copied the url on the flickr website then pasted it where it says "insert picture here" with img src=http:
    //www.flickr.com/photos/13673162@N00/3337363976/
    > without the spaces of course. Can some one PLEASE type out a step by step of what I should do. I have managed to post stuff on other forums before, but cannot figure out this one, I can however get links to post so here is my flicker link so you can see what I have so far. I'm not sure if flickr is the same as photobucket, which I use

    When viewing the thumbnail page, if you scroll over an image, four seperate options drop down beneath the image.
    One of them is HTML code.
    You simply copy the HTML code, and paste in the text of you message here.
    This site is different than most forums I have been on where you click on a image icon in your message box and paste the "diect link"(one of the other three options with photobuckst) and paste it in there

    I have seedlings stared from different dates, but this is my batch from 3/1. I just potted them up into these 160z cups yesterday. A few of the varieties were quite leggy, but I potted them all right up to the cots so they have uniform height (for now!).

    I have a few plants out in the garden, and I'll post those pics soon. Everything prior to this batch was done without the knowledge that I have gained from reading throughout the past few months, so we'll see how they fare against those that were started sooner in less than ideal conditions. :o)

    sammiek,

    You put the URL of the web page and not of the image in your <img> tag. To get the URL of the image, right click on the image and don't copy the URL from the address bar in your browser. Your image URL should end with ".jpg" which is an image extension for the JPEG file type.

    Hope this makes some sense...

    Ever determined to have the first ripe tomato on my block I planted this early girl out today. this is very ealry for my zone (7), but I guess I went nuts Notice my home made wall o waters experiment. Lol. if this does not work, at least I will have my early girl bush (in a bucket as noted above) to try to get me that first mater. Talk about obesssion.

    i am adding more water and if it even gets close to frost temps I am adding covering via the cage.

    Here are few shots of the tomatoes (and few other herbs and vegetables) I have in containers on my south-facing patio in a rooftop apartment in Germany.

    The first pic is a partial family photo with granny yellow pear in the middle. She sprouted last october from fruit I had just left to rot. I brought her indoors where she grew very slowly over the winter. At times, it didn't look like she was going to pull through. Obviously, she survived:

    {{gwi:1297481}}

    This side of the yellow pear:

    {{gwi:1297482}}

    Notice the red-tailed bumble bee! Three of them are buzzing around like clockwork several times a day.

    That side of the yellow pear:

    {{gwi:1297483}}

    Next picture is of a patio tomato (together with a jalapeno) taken a few days ago before transplanting. Both plants were doing just fine until about two weeks ago: all new shoots and blossoms on the tomato became very weak as soon as the sun was shining. Several kind forum members advised me that my container (12 liters) was much too small and gave some good advice.

    {{gwi:1297484}}

    Today after transplanting into a basket (32 liters) lined with mosiqito net:

    {{gwi:1297485}}

    If the weather clears up any time soon, I'll hopefully be able to report progress in the near future.
