More on Coir !

I learned a valuable less about coir recently while starting some tomato seeds. Even at a depth of a couple of inches, the stuff stays incredibly wet, while dry or just damp at the surface.

I've had remarkably good luck with coir used in conjunction with a wicking mat (Burpee's), and gotten fantastic germination and roots. But to just water the stuff, it stays way too wet to the point of being soggy. I repotted the poor, yellowed seedlings in a peat mix, and within 24 hours, they had started to recover.

I think that a good use may be to just put coir only as the top 1/2" of the container. That's the next test, anyway.

Thanks for the heads-up! I'm just starting my seeds and looked for coir, but came up empty handed. I'll know to be more careful if and when I'm able to get my hands on any coir.
