All my eight year old tomato seeds are starting to sprout

I have a lot of tomato seeds that were packaged for 2002. I planted three varieties, Yellow Perfection, Chadwick Cherry, and Fox Cherry, and all three have sprouted at least some seeds. They are taking anywhere from two days to a week longer than fresh seeds to sprout, and the germination rate is lower than fresh seeds, but at least this shows that eight year old seeds can still be viable. I stored them at room temperature, no special precautions.

Good deal for you. ;) Always nice to know that saving them is worth the effort.

But seeds much older than 8 years have been proven to be viable. I'm still using some seeds from 10 years back and there is at least one previous post I can think of using 12 year old seeds and another about 25 year old seeds so save those seeds.
