Benefit to potting up into large containers?

I'm curious as to whether using a larger container when I transplant small seedlings has any significant benefit? When I buy plants they all seem to come in small pots, and still look great and grow well. Any thoughts?

As long as they get transplanted once before going to final grow place. Those you buy in 6 packs for example have been transplanted at least once - from germination try to the 6 pack - and sometimes 2x to reach that 6 pack.

Search here will bring up the previous 'potting up' discussions for more details. Primary benefit is it triggers fibrous/feeder root development.

digdirt,(Dave) would you say the benefit is the same whether you pot up into a 4" pot or, say, an 8" pot? Does giving the plant some room to spread out in a pot prior to setting out in the garden have value in your opinion? Or is it all the same... just get the plants into the garden as soon as the weather permits?

My experience is that if a tomato plant stays in a pot too long (pot bound) you gain nothing. It will take much longer for it to adjust to a new surrounding than if you just got a little seedling that hadn't filled out its container.

Did someone say something about large containers?

No we are talking about the normal incremental potting up to slightly larger containers - aka staged transplanting - not jumping from say a cell pack to an 8" container.

Putting tiny seedlings in huge containers creates all sorts of problems for them - primarily root development due to all the excess moisture.

For me each time I transplant I bury them deeper for more root growth, making sure all branches are cut off that will be buried before transplanting. There we have to get an early start due to our summers season reaching 95+ temps quickly.
