Alaskan Fish Fertilizer for Tomato plants?

Posted by tn_veggie_gardner 6 (My Page) on

I was thinking about buying some of this to try this year. It's a 5-1-1, which seems to be very close to what tomato (and many other container veggies) need for NPK ratio. Anyone used this before? Success? Failure? Any & all opinions & thoughts appreciated. My thought is to buy a nice quality potting mix, but one w/o any added fertilizer and to just use this to give the correct NPK ratio to the potting medium. Thanks! - Steve

It works fine. Your suggested use is exactly how I use it.

Dont apply to seedlings you might bring indoors (you'll be sorry).

I also use kelp meal/compost tea for more micronutrients.

If used heavily it can make seedlings grow too fast, keep that in mind if they still have awhile before putting in the ground.

Apply after a rain or watering.

I put on the root zone rather than foliar feed.

Oh

some years when its cool I have found this isnt enough P so I supplement at least 2 feedings with some kind of soluble P source.

Early P is very important to early fruit formation.
