Park's Heirloom Rainbow Blend

Just got my seeds today and it seems they are all mixed in one package of 30 seeds. Any ideas on how I can sort through these? I guess this is why the pack was so cheap. Kinda regret buying it now. =(

That's why I would never buy a mixture that didn't identify what seeds were each variety. If one turns out really good or really bad you won't know which it was. Also I suspect some sellers might include mostly the seeds they are having a hard time selling.

Yep that's the problem with it. Others have asked in the past how to sort them - to tell which is which. No way to do it except to grow them. Sorry. Best thing for mixes is to only buy those that come individually packaged in the envelop. Dave

Renee's Garden Seeds and Botanical Interests sell some mixtures that you can separate as seed. Each variety is dyed a different color with food safe dyes. They may also sell mixtures that aren't color coded: check the package labeling and don't make assumptions. The seeds I've had from both companies were (mostly) easy to sort. Ones from other companies have not been identifiable until they grew ALOT. Fun if you like surprises, not fun if you have limited space and want one of each variety.

Some mixes dye the seeds different colors to distinguish each variety, but I guess that is too much to ask for in this case huh? I had a mixed package of cherries once and I slowly picked out seedlings until I had one of each, but it takes a while to do that.

Junk. Donate it to a community garden where they can grow them all and you can go view the results. Then get a few seeds of specific heirloom and old standards and grow those at home.

DOH! What are you all whining about? Did you look at what the pack contains? You have a named blend with six distinctly different fruits. You'll see what's what when they grow out. I think you'll be able to tell one from another when they ripen. Contains Aunt Ruby's German Green, Dixie Golden Giant, Black from Tula, Brandywine Red, Big Rainbow, and Cherokee Purple.

trudi I think the problem is that unless one has the space to grow all 30 seeds, you can't plant one or two of each, for instance, a more reasonable number of tomato plants! It's great for people who wouldn't mind what plants they grew from the pack. Maybe Park Seeds could be advised that they, too, can color-code their seeds so people can ID the ones they plant!

I'm a big supporter of all of Renee's Garden Trio-Packs, I've touted them for years--I think they're very economical for people who want to try some of this and some of that. I just think it's bizarre to bash a company when you got what you ordered. Grow some this year, grow some next year--the seeds will still germinate just find twelve months from now.

I agree with Anney. I don't think most people will be able to grow out all 30 plants so that they can cull them to one of each in the blend, because (at least for me) you'd have to wait until they had ripe fruit in order to tell which plant is which. that's sad :( I ordered a package of cherry seeds that came this way and was similarly disappointed that I couldn't separate them. Lycopsycho, I have Aunt Ruby's German Green and a few big Rainbow seeds. Shoot me an email with your address and I can send a few of each if you'd like.

Now that I am over my initial disappointment, I think I have the beginnings of a plan. I might be able to get away with growing around 15 plants, which would make it very unlikely that I miss any particular variety. I can pot some and put the rest in the garden. How can I be upset with any heirlooms when all I had was hybrids last year? (very few I might add due to LB) I really appreciate the offer for seeds but I don't think I could really benefit from that since I still have to pick 4 varieties out of 6. However! If I am missing any at the end of the season, I might take you up on that! Thanks everyone!
