The best pink tomato?

Hi,

I really want to grow a pink tomato but don't really know what type to grow.I want one that is very pink rather than looking more reddish. There is something about the rich colour that appeals to me. I'm currently thinking I'll try Brandywine Suddith's Strain.

What is everyone's favourite pink tomato?

Nothing wrong with Brandywine Sudduth at all. ;) Also consider Arkansas Traveler, Giant Belgium, 1884 and Aunt Ginny's Purple (it's pink not purple) and as good as BS IMO.

RE: The best pink tomato?

I see you're in a zone 11 in Australia and Brandywine ( Suddth) often has a very hard time setting fruits in that kind of weather.

I don't have ONE best pink tomato favorite but could list some I like if that would help.

But I think one very important question to be asked is what seeds are available to you in Australia since there is currently a ban on sending tomato seeds to Australia b'c of concerns about the Tomato Spindle Viroid which also affects tomatoes. So no one here in the US can send tomato seeds to you whather they be private individuals or seed companies.

That may restrict what pink tomato varieties you can grow based on accessibilty within Australia. I know Diggers is one place and I wonder if you've already looked there to see what might be available to you.

I forgot to add that there is an Australia Forum here at GW and that might be a good place to ask about tomato seed availability within Australia.

There is a few different seed companies that sell heirlooms here in Australia. And eBay also has sellers with tomato seeds here.

My idea with the brandywine was to grow it in winter. I don't get any frosts, it barely gets below 10°C (approx 50F) and the weather is drier. I figured it should grow ok then.

I can grow tomatoes all year round here but in summer it gets tedious as everything grows so slowly. Too much heat, humidity, sunshine and BUGS! Fruit still sets but takes forever to ripen.I'm currently growing Black Krim but its a bit sick due to mealy bugs.

Nann

Here is the tomato page from Eden Seeds in Australia. It lists the Arkansas Traveler tomato that Dave suggests. I don't know how it would do for you, but Mortgage Lifter is also a pink tomato. I'm sure there are other pinks on the rather long list, but I don't know which ones are. You can always do an internet search on gardening catalogs to check out the color.

One American list of pink and purple tomatoes that might be helpful to compare to what's available to you. Then you could list the ones available so we can tell you our growing experience with them.

Thanks anney,

I've been looking at the lists from Eden and other seed vendors here and then looking the types up on Tatiana's Tomatobase to see what they are exactly.

I'm not only interested in what I can get in Australia but in what others think of different pink tomatoes flavour-wise too. I've been reading through this forum for a while now and I haven't come across much mention about pink tomatoes specifically so I thought I'd ask about them.

Anney,

From the list you linked to I know I can get:

Brandywine, Pink
Brandywine Sudduths
Caspian Pink
Cherokee Purple
Eva Purple Ball
Marianna's Peace
Mortgage Lifter - Radiator Charlie's
Ponderosa
Pruden's Purple
Travellor

of those I'm interested in Brandywine, Eva Purple Ball (except that this one is meant to be fairly small) and Cherokee Purple...
What would be recommendable?

 o
RE: The best pink tomato?

Caspian Pink
Pruden's Purple
Dora

 o
RE: The best pink tomato?

I like Eva Purple Ball very much and Pale Perfect Purple. I also grew Mortgage Lifter and liked it. Eva is just the right size for me.

 o
RE: The best pink tomato?

Dora
Brandywine
Cherokee Purple is not pink, it is dark. And I determined that all by myself without even linking to some other website.

RE: The best pink tomato?

nobody mentioned Gregoris Altai.

 o
RE: The best pink tomato?

Gregori's Altai is Red.

I have to modestly disagree re Caspian Pink but only because your climate is not quite what it prefers. Eva Purple Ball is a fantastically productive tomato, but the flavor is significantly less than others you can find. But if you are growing them for canning or sauce or other uses where a lot of tomatoes is desirable, then Eva Purple Ball would easily fit the bill.

Here are a few that you might also look for.

Actually Gregori's Altai is pink, 8-16 oz. It has been listed as pink by all the SSE members in the SSE Yearbooks.
It is Sasha's Altai that is red (and smaller-fruited)

Eva Purple Ball was a great tomato for me last year. It produced well even with the lousy weather and tasted great to me. It was the favorite tomato that I grew. It's a little bit smaller, but that meant it didn't take as long to get ripe and there were a ton of them. Cherokee Purple was about the same size but it is a black tomato, not pink. Cherokee Purple was also very good.

If you aren't one of those folks that has aversion to growing hybrids, and can get seed there in Australia, I would suggest Brandy Boys. They are pink, taste great as slicing tomatoes and are more desease resistance than heirloom Brandywines.

RE: The best pink tomato?

There are a lot of great pink tomatoes out there and I’ve only tried a few but the ones that I have tried and tasted great (my taste buds aren’t that good so no particular order) from my garden are:

Brandywine

Brandywine Sudduth strain

Caspian Pink

Bradley

Crnkovic Yugoslavian (although yields weren’t that great for me)

Momotaro (hybrid on the mild side)

I have tried Brandy Boy Hybrid for 3 years side by side with the above tomatoes but I have yet to get more than a couple tomatoes from each plant if it even survives. I continue to try because I’ve read a lot of folks like it a lot and I still have seeds.

RE: The best pink tomato?

I grew Brandy Boy last year in Fairfax, VA and even with all the rain the 1 plant was pumping out the maters over the season. Also grew Momotaro and it did well too. Used SWC to grow plants. Will be comparing Brandy Bow with Cowlick Brandywine this year along with Pink Brandymaster.

The 2 that grew in my garden accidentally and I forgot to save the seeds to it are my "favorite"...devoured the 2 pinks and thought wow, amazing..now no seeds. duh..Never grew a pink before...now I may be a convert.

I'll be comparing Brandy Boy with Cowlick Brandywine, Earl's Faux, and Brandywine Sudduth, too, if all goes well! In fact, this year the Brandy Boy is the only tomato I will have grown before -- all the rest are new to me, and all are heirlooms with the exception of Br. Boy and Sungold F1.

I'm hoping the weather, pests, and diseases are kinder to our gardens than they were last year.

my comparison will also include these red/pink in addition to the 3 above. Hybrids Momotaro, Big Beef, Beefmaster, Porterhouse

Toedebusch Pink-Big Zac F4-Mule Team-Limbaugh Legacy PT

RE: The best pink tomato?

Interesting history on Gregori's Altai Tatiana,

I went back to seedstrust.com to see what they list it as. They say 'purple/red'. This is interesting because they list other tomatoes with variations of the normal colors such as red/orange, deep red, etc. When I have grown Gregori's Altai, it has always been a deep reddish pink color, much deeper than a pink like Eva Purple Ball. Guess I will have to re-grow it again this year.

I had several pinks (including Brandywine and Mortgage Lifter) and my favorite was German Johnson Pink. :)
