It's been 55*-60* lately here at 5-6 AM. I planted out a New Big Dwarf and a Husky Red Cherry for grins. I usually plant out around Saint Patrick's Day or shortly there after -- but in this warm weather, thought it might make sense to jump the gun a bit (on a limited basis). I've been hardening off my seedlings outside around the clock as well. Any other So Cal growers planting out yet?

No, not yet. Last year was unusually warmer, so I planted some tomatoes in early Feb in paper pots. I moved the seedlings into ground at some point. But the weather subsided and tomatoes did not really grow, but grew at a very slow rate. Comparing these to ones I planted later in March or April in ground, the ones planted earlier in February weren't any bigger. The ones planted in warmer season grew faster and caught up in size. So, I'm not planting any tomatoes until mid March to April.

Most are hardening and still back and forth but several are planted out. Will get serious about it in the next couple of weeks.

The soil temperature isn't quite warm enough yet. I'm keeping mine in for a few more weeks, then hardening off.

Yes, it's a bit early. The two toms I planted out are not growing yet. Nothing is lost by giving it a shot. I still like to float a few trial balloons to gauge when the time is right. In some years with successful plant outs in early March, I can start harvesting early tomatoes/cherries in late May. It's well worth the effort. Here are my hardened tomato seedlings:

Man, this used to be a very busy forum. Did someone run everybody off? Are we in a new anti-nightshade trend and I missed it? :) Anyway, my early plantouts are doing fine and dandy right now. i put out a few more today and may have them all outside pretty soon.

I generally plant out April 1. Any earlier than that and I get lots of foliage, but no tomatoes for quite a while. Daytime temps are not as important as nighttime temps. I finally decided on April 1 around 15 years ago and it works I'm in the San Gabriel valley, about 30 miles east of LA.
