Where to learn about tomato genetics?

I have a budding interest in learning about tomato genetics. I have had some trouble finding anything that would teach me the basics on up. Is there a book or a thread or a forum where I could begin? Any suggestions?

I'd go directly to the website of Keith Mueller which I've linked to below. And lots of links within that excellent site.

For a book I'd go to the following book by Carol Deppe about how to breed your own vegetables, there's a 2nd edition as well, but I don't have the time to check that out. She has a glossary where she lists the most common genes of tomatoes and it's a quick and easy way to get up to speed with that.

I'm not suggsting you get it from the place above, but if interested just shop around via Google. Amazon and others sell it as I remembe rand you can probably get a used copy for an excellent price.

So I'd start with the link below, check some of the links when through reading the stuff under Culture, or whatever, and yes, there's a link there to the PGRC, or Rick Center at UC Davis in CA, but it's more for someone who already has some idea of tomato genetics IMO.

Hope that helps.

You can also peruse the gene list at TGRC.

Darrel, I referred to the Rick Center above in my post, but said, and do believe, that perusing the genes there is really for someone like yourself who is heavily into tomato genetics.

Just going through all those many pages of how many genes, for someone who is just wanting to get started I think is just not the way to go.

Start out with the genes for the basic traits and then if a person wants to get into tomato breeding, or similar, OK.

And when I referred to Keith's site above, and linked to it I said there were many more links, and of course the Rick Center ( PGRC) is one of them.

Just my opinion on tomato genetics and just getting into it. ( smile)

If you know the genetic sequence of one tomato variety; then it can help you or any seed company and also the plant breeders, producing different varieties. These varieties like the heirloom tomatoes are different from the generic grocery tomato.
