Are you dreaming of tomatoes?

We were just snowed in and I find myself dreaming of summer tomatoes...even more so than last week. I was just curious of what tomato you miss the most all year? I know growers on here get very technical about tomatoes and how it is impossible to choose, but c'mon isn't there ONE you just miss more? I find myself most excited for Cherokee Purple...it is a stingy plant, but I just LOVE the flavor. I like to eat it out of hand. I haven't grown nearly as many tomatoes as others on this site...maybe 50 or so, so I was just wondering what is your "dreamy tomato". It will help me choose for next years tomato plantings. I can't imagine a better tasting tomato than Cherokee Purple, but the greedy eater in me, sure would love a better tomato... if possible. :)

Hard to pick one like Pink Floyd songs but I would say my favorite is a big juicy yellow red bi-color like Mr Stripey which is stingier than CPurple. Love the middle sliced out of a 24 oz fruit with bacon and egg.

RE: Are you dreaming of tomatoes?

This is my first season growing tomatoes. I've never had a Cherokee Purple, but I've heard great things about them.

One of the tomatoes I'm growing this year is the Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye from Wild Boar farms. It's apparently a similar tomato, but a newer strain. (Still O.P.) The Baker Creek catalog said it actually beat Cherokee Purple in a taste test! We'll see.

I should note that the seedlings seem smaller and weaker than the other, older varieties I've got growing.

I am right there with you. Your picture made my mouth water. Cherokee purple or Black Krims. I love the flavor of them. Mmmmm picked right off the vine and eaten in the yard, tossing leftover to the hens, not that there is much left, just my little daydream. No more snow.

bigpinks- Mr. Stripey sure does look good, but I once grew Beauty King and did not like it. It looks similar. Well...I liked the fruity flavor of the flesh, but it had a huge core. Does anyone know why it had that? I'll put Mr. Stripey on my list...thanks :)

harveyhorses- thank you for the compliment. People always seem to like my vegetable photography because of the water drops. The truth is I have to rinse them and QUICK, or else my little girl will eat them, and I worry about chx manure contamination. But it's a nice side effect! How many do you usually get per plant?

MTyas- I saw that in Bakers Creek, but I was hesitant, because the Wild Boars Farm seeds were more expensive than the usual Baker Creek seeds, and they all looked like tomatoes I have already seen before like green zebra, red zebra and such. Does anyone know if they are the same thing? Or "almost" the same thing, as some companies do? Or are they really different?

I'm not sure if Wild Boar's tomato breeds are really different. I'd like to hope so. I guess it's always a shot in the dark taking a chance on a newer, less-proven variety.

I've attached a link to the "testimonial" page on their site.

Like I said, this is my first time growing tomatoes, (actually, this is my first garden since digging in the dirt with my Mom when I was a little girl. Moved into a home that finally has some outdoor space!) so I've got zero hands-on experience, and very little knowledge of tomato varieties, but I'm really excited about it.

The other seedlings I've got right now are Mortgage Lifter, (I liked the "Radiator Charlie" story,) Cosmonaut Volkov, and Striped Roman.

What varieties, besides Cherokee Purple, are you growing this season?

Well, anything you grow yourself will taste better than the grocery store tomatoes. I am sure you are going to love this tomato. It looks good. The coloring/striping looks similar to a tomato I grow called Violet Jasper, Tzi Bi U, is the name it was introduced as though. If you like Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye, maybe try Violet Jasper out the next year too. Maybe they taste similar.??? VJ is a great tomato because it isn't very fussy and puts out a LOT of tomatoes. I know when I was brand new to growing, that is what I liked the best! It made me feel accomplished! haha

I like the Radiator Charlie Story too...my grandmother LOVES that tomato. I've had the striped Roman; it sure is beautiful. Very very pretty. It tasted fine for sauce, but I prefer a different tomato for sauce. Lots of trial and error for me.

I am growing this year in addition to CP:
Aunt Ruby's German Green
Traveler
Blondkopfchen
Beefsteak
Dr. Wyches Yellow
Emmy
Gypsy
Italian Heirloom
Isis Candy
Juane Flamme
Jersey Devil
Lemon Drop
Pearly Pink
Pineapple
Pink Brandywine
Red Zebra
Sarah's Galapagos
TomatoBerry (the hybrid- it came in a trade- I hate to waste seed)
Violet Jasper
White Queen

Whew! That was a long list! And yes, I know I have a problem. I attempt to try as many as I can each year, seeing what I can add to my permanent collection. And each year, I grow more and more tomatoes. It kinda creates a problem for rotation.

That IS quite a list! So many tomatoes to choose from. You're going to be in heaven in the Summer. Violet Jasper sounds great... I'm not too sure about the yields of PBTD, but I'm trying to be optimistic. BLT's are the best warm weather lunch!

I've included a picture of the light platform my husband built for our plants. Sorry that it's sideways. (We have about zero south-facing windows and a ton of fluorescent ballast lighting. Our house used to be a dress shop.)

Fingers crossed Summer comes sooner rather than later. Best of luck with your tomato menagerie! Keep us posted on their progress.

Do you know I've never done a count per plant, the Krims do not produce as heavily for me, the CP are pretty heavy producers, 3, 4 a day during peak, then they taper off, but h by are they worth it.
I grew Belgian giants and have gotten very fond of them for soups. I want spring.

RE: Are you dreaming of tomatoes?

I have been craving vine ripe tomatoes since December! It is very hard to choose just one put I agree that Purple Cherokee is a "must grow". This year I am growing:
Purple Cherokee
Black Pineapple
Reistomate
Copia
Green Zebra
Big Rainbow
Great White
and a couple others I am forgetting at the moment.
Pictured is a beautiful 14 oz. Purple Cherokee picked, sliced, and enjoyed in the garden. Nothing better than enjoying lunch in the garden!

RE: Are you dreaming of tomatoes?

Favorite tasting last year was big white pink striped tomato...which wasn't white or striped, just big and pink so don't understand the name! But boy, was that a great tasting tomato...and yes, a little stingy but the one I am dreaming about this cold, cold Spring.

RE: Are you dreaming of tomatoes?

harveyhorses- Do you get 3-4 per plant per day? Wow! I get about 6 per plant the whole summer! Maybe I am doing something wrong, or you are just doing something right. I apparantly grow the stingiest Cherokee Purple.

vagreenie- Your picture is making my mouth water. I really REALLY, want to try Reistomate. I know it isn't supposed to taste good, but I think my little girl would like it. Have you grown it before? Any pictures?

Lorabell - I had to google it, I had never heard of that one before. Weird name since it looks all white to me. I never know how they come up with the names.

 o
RE: Are you dreaming of tomatoes?

They only do that for a week or so. I have a few people who wonder why I plant my Black Krims, because they don't produce a ton, to me it is a trade, which is worth it.
At least it stopped snowing.

RE: Are you dreaming of tomatoes?

linzelu100 - No this will be my first season growing the Reistomate. I am very intrigued by the structure of the fruit so I decided to give it a whirl. I have heard different opinions on the taste so I am excited to see for myself. Here is another pic! MMM MMM Good!

 o
RE: Are you dreaming of tomatoes?

Now that's a tasty looking tomato...100 days until my first tomato will be on the plate, let the countdown begin.
