Sun-dried tomatoes

I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience and were successful sun drying large tomatoes. I know it's best to use roma and cherry types, but I did a little research and read it can be do-able with things such as beefsteaks etc. but it's tricky.

This year I am growing

White Wonder cherry
Black seaman
Gypsy
Black Pineapple
Black Krim
Beefsteak ( I don't know which kind. I got it for free from a seed giveaway.. but it is much bigger than the others so far and sowed at same time)

I do have some roma seeds and MANY other types of heirlooms.. it's just a lack of space factor growing many other plants too in a small space.

So has anyone tried this?

You'll find many discussions about this over on the Harvest forum here - it is the food preservation forum. I have linked one of the best and most detailed discussion for you below. The search there will pull up all the others if you want to read them.

Personally we dry lots of tomatoes each season including the larger non-roma types. But we use dehydrators - I think most do - given all the problems associated with trying to use the sun.

Thanks Dave. I did 2 searches and didn't find anything. Loads of threads but nothing jumping with sun-dried.

No body does SUN DRYing anymore, with today's dehydrator technology, sun drying is out of fashion, except in some remote places in the world that do not have electricity or have not heard of DEHYDRATOR.
