I just the attached a picture from right here on Tomato forum. I like colorful basket of tomatoes. This basket, however is missing GREEN and bi color. OK now. How colorful is your tomato garden ? How many different color, size, and shape of tomatoes are you growing. I, myself, am growing several: The rest consist of mostly reds of various sizes and shapes ( i.e. the are supposed to be)

Many years ago there was a contest where folks submitted pictures to head this Forum. The winner was Patrina from Australia whose picture you show. She also grew many green when ripes as well as gold/red bicolors, but didn't include them in the basket. I can't speak to what I'm growing now, since I no longer can do that, but I do obtain seeds , mostly new to all that my seed producers work with and send me pictures and specs on them and make a large seed offer elsewhere.. And after growing abut 4,000 varieties myself I think it's reasonable to say that I've seen almost any shape one can think of, different sizes and for sure different colors, and well as different foliage types, etc.some deliberately bred, but most heirloom varieties, which has always been my major interest. It's also true that something new pops up every year as to colors, mainly from ones that were deliberaely bred. Of the ones you list above that you are growing I've grown them all. Carolyn

How many different color, size, and shape of tomatoes are you growing. Seedlings I have (in addition to red/pink) are cults like Homer Fike's Yellow Ox, KBX, Spear's TN Green, Berkeley Tie Dye, Large Boared Boar, JD's Special C-Tex, Paul Robeson, Midnight in Moscow, Ananas Noire and Everett's Rusty Ox. No purple or small-fruited things... real men do not grow "cherry" tomatoes. Reggie |

We are cutting back this year and will plant only about 250 plants - when we ever get to plant given the weather this year. 85% will be reds and pinks as they are what we prefer and what sells 20:1 at the market. We also grow a few Black Krims for home and approx. 20-30 mixed yellows, oranges and bi-colors as they are the second best sellers. We don't care for any of the greens and very few of them sell so we skipped them entirely this year. Dave

What I have ordered this year: Pink - ML If I stumble across some other yellow/gold/orange types when wandering through greenhouses and farmers markets this spring, I will probably add a few more to the mix. I also need to pick up a couple of cherry tomato plants, probably SunSugar and Black Cherry if I can find them. Now to just wait and see what this crazy weather is going to do next... Edie

Thanks Carolyn. I am sure you know them all and have grown them in the past. And thanks Dave, EdieJ, Reggie, and Whosutomato for respondind. Lets us not forget to make an arrangement of our fruits when the time comes, take picture and post. Once a chef said that we eat with our eyes first. I think that is true. Color of fruits and vegetables can influence our judgement and appetite.

My tomato garden is strictly reds and purples (with one yellow). I admire the colors, but grow them for my tastes. :)

ONE MORE QUESTION ABOUT Color of Tomato (fruit). What is behind the color of tomatoes ? We know that certain colors in leafy and root vegetables are linked to certain beneficial nutrition, like beta carotene. Is there any such thing in tomato fruits ? does for example, a brown/black , orange/yellow tomatoes have something that red/pinks do NOT have ??

Red tomatoes have more lycopene whereas orange/yellow have less. I feel very uncolorful compared to others in this thread. I'm growing:
|
I have Estlers ML, Mr Stripey, Cherokee p, Pineapple, Big Beef, Parks Whopper, Orange Slice, Sweet Million, Sungold, Italian Ice and Choc Cherry. Neighbor promised me a couple of his Bearclaw and Hillbilly. The prettiest color tomato for what I like is Brandy Boy. Now that is a pink that grabs your eye....sorta raspberry?

Dave's "cutting back" is about double what I grow in a given year! I've got mostly reds/pink too, I did have someone at market last year ask me for a yellows so trying 2 of those (plus some yellow cherries - not Yellow Pear!). Sold a few Black Krim plants last year to people who had been looking all over for them, but the fruit doesn't sell well at market (if it makes it without splitting) so I mostly grow those for myself, take the Cherokee Purple to market. Still trying to decide which I prefer the taste of. 50 DTM Kootenai determinate dwarf type, slightly oblate 2-2.5" red fruits. Sand Hill says will do well in 3 gal pots The girls each started 3 seeds of the Independence Day that was mislabeled (slicer, not cocktail, and not early), DD covered hers too deeply so just started popping up yesterday but looks like they will have 6 from seeds started April 17 and they will be starting more this week(end?) and maybe mid-May so they will just be germinating by the 22nd. I don't know what we're going to with a dozen or more of those, started so late. Maybe give them to the community garden? I've also got 8 SuperSweet 100's - 1 for my dad, was going to plant the rest but I don't know if I have room with all the others, will have to think about how many red cherries I want. Still trialing a lot of varieties, hoping for "normal" weather since the past 3 years have not been a good test (though tomatoes yielded pretty well in 2012, I kept them watered - 2011 and 2013 too wet).

Blue tomatoes have anthocyanin. I scoff at the health benefits from eating blue tomatoes versus any other color but it certainly is the most striking tomato that I grow. An Indigo Rose with its jet black fruits is a sight to behold! Aug 31, 2013 harvest:
