Growing tomatoes: Be prepared for the dangers

My heart lusts for the Texas Tomato Cages but they are not in the budget this year, especially since I'm buying materials to build anti-squirrel fortifications.
I was not prepared for how much the sheet remesh wants to stay a sheet rather than becoming circular like I wanted it to. It fwapped back and got me, fortunately not doing any mortal damage, but I'm certainly going to be more careful tomorrow when I work on more of the cages.
Who knew that this was going to be such an adventure!

Today went much better. Remesh cages are really sturdy, worth the time it took to make them.

A good post for reminding all gardeners to make sure their tetanus shots are up to date. :)

Lucille - post a pic of a finished one when you get the chance. I'd like to see them.

OK Dave. I'm deciding whether to make individual squirrel deterrent cages on the outside of each tomato cage. But I'm also thinking that I could make an entire area squirrel proof.

Squirrel proofing: The hardware cloth may not be a good idea. It will keep out squirrels, but it also shades out more light than I would like, especially in an area that already has a little shade from some nearby trees.

Remesh cages are great and the only reason I bought the Texas Tomato Cages was because we have storage issues. Otherwise, I would have gone with the remesh and sprayed with some galvanizing spray because it's more cost effective.
