When will they turn red?

I've had tomatoes on my plants for weeks now. The first ones to start don't seem to be getting any bigger, nor do they seem to be ripening. This is really the first time that I've grown them at the right time (last year was WAY too late for where we live) so I'm not sure how long it takes before they're ready to be picked. What am I missing?

I have a Stupice that I transplanted into my garden on March 19 and I see two tomatoes on it that are turning red, I will probably give them another day or two though to get really red.

What you are missing is patience. ;) It's never really been as long as we 'think' it has been.

Every year at this time we all get antsy to see red but it just isn't going to happen until the fruit is ready. And that is an average of 6-8 weeks after fruitset.

Thanks Dave! I didn't realize it took that long. I'll go back to being patient :)

IMO this needs to be stickied, since these questions are asked every year and pictures are worth... well you know

RE: When will they turn red? P.S.

P.S.

Oh and I really appreciate the person that took those timeline photos. Helped me predict when I get my first red tomatoes to within a couple days last year. Cherry types were a few days earlier.

RE: When will they turn red?

They will turn red as soon as you do any of the following:

1.) Go away for the weekend, or an extended vacation.
2.) Acquire a store bought tomato (because you just can't wait any longer).
3.) Forget that there are green tomatoes in your garden.

Much like the saying, "A watched pot never boils"... "A watched tomato never ripens."

LOVE the time line!
I remember some seeming like they took forever to ripen :) Now I know why.

digdirt is right, patience is a virtue of necessity, especially for tomato growers it seems. I bought two "Better Bush" [Lycopersicon lyconpersicum] at Costco for container growing this year, I got them 7-1/2 weeks ago and each has yielded about 20 to 30 tomatoes. So far this past week I have harvested four toms. These first fruits were a bit smaller, but equally delicious! Here's to good eating!

Blessings!

RE: When will they turn red?

It is so typical of the gardeners around this time of the year. I am included too. So to according to that timeline, i will have to wait 7 mooore weeks to see a ripe red tomato. It feels like an eternity. lol
