Any Tomato Tips? (growing from seed)

I'm growing Cherry, Beefsteak, and Ace 55 this year and I just started growing my own vegetables last year. It left a big mess that took about 4 hours to clean up today (I didn't clean it up in the fall) and I ended up with a lot of stalks of stuff in my compost bin. Anyway, I planted the seeds about 10 days ago? They haven't germinated. 'Has anyone tried SeedsNow?' I decided to try it this year. The green beans have come out well, but before the tomatoes (which is strange?)
Any tips? I'm keeping them under fluorescent lights hanging from the ceiling. There's no heating pad, but the tomatoes were fine when I planted them last year from seed.

Am I late for planting this year? I remember I planted the tomatoes in June outside last year.. So I don't think it's a big issue..

Just give me any tips on tomato planting.. And anything that would be useful to me. Thanks :)

i am far from a pro here, but I thought I would let you know about my experience this season. I started many seeds indoors under HPS lights including beans, cukes, melons, peas, and maters. My peas beans and cukes took off. My tomatoes still haven't come out of the soil after 2 weeks. The seeds i planted straight into the garden at the same time, havent either. Im just waiting. I know it couldnt be bad seeds, as I have about a billion different types from different people and places. Maybe the tomatoes are just cozy where they are and are waiting for they're grand enterance. lol

At the top of this first page notice the FAQ's and one of them, very excellent, is how to start from seeds. And I've linked to it below.

You might want to take a look at some other FAQ's since several of them are excellent, such as he one having to with preventing cross pollination.

You should check out the Growing from Seed forum here too since all your questions are the focus of that forum.

For some one who starts 100s of seeds, this might be practical but if you do just a few, try germinating in moist paper towel, in a zipper bag( each variety in its own small bag marked)

Wrap them in dish towel , put them on top of a low wattage lamp shade. Don't fully cover the top. Let some of the hot air get out.

This is next best thing to a heat mat. And better than top of frig.
You will need one of those simple meat thermometers to check the heat and adjust the towel thickness so it wont get warmer than 90F. Use lowest wattage CFL. It will generate enough heat.

Once they sprout, transfer them into starter mix in 2" cells or several of them in a 4" pot.

Do bottom watering. And sprinkle and mix in some Mosquito dunk with your starter mix to prevent Fungus Gnats. This is my BEST tip. You wont find it anywhere . haha:)

You don't say where you're starting the seeds. If you're not using a heat mat, the temperature may be important. For instance, I start seeds in my house (about 70-72 degrees). Then as soon as I see sprouts (about 3-4 days) I transfer the trays to the fluorescent lights in the basement so the seedlings will be short and healthy.

The problem is that sometimes the basement (a fairly warm walk-out basement) is a bit too cool, and I didn't have a heat mat. So the seeds which hadn't sprouted in the house didn't want to sprout in the cool basement, and wouldn't sprout until weeks later.

So not knowing where you're starting your seeds, I'm wondering if your problem might be temperature. [**blushes** I don't know what temperature it is in the basement. My 3 portable thermometers disagree.]

[This year family issues have taken up most of the past 7 weeks, with no foreseeable change, so I didn't start seeds. The last time I didn't start my own seedlings, I had good crops from most of the varieties I'd purchased. Was at WM a couple of days ago and bought German Queen, Pink BW, and Beefsteak, as well as a couple of Husky Cherry Reds for the corners of the front porch (masquerading as ornamental dwarf conifers), and my next trip will be to a couple of places where there'll be more variety. Chances are that the recently-epidemic Late Blight will get them all anyway....]

My tip is to wait until the last frost date and maybe even a couple days more. An unexpected late hard freeze can do a lot of damage to planted out seedlings.

You might be planting the seeds too deep. I put the tomato seeds just barely under the soil, not much deeper for pepper seeds.
