In my experience when a developing fruit is supported by a skinny stem the end result will be small fruit. The flowers of my Brandywine tomatoes are finally staying on the plant and not falling off. But the stems supporting the flower are so small they look like they can barley support the flower I cant imagine them supporting an entire tomato. What do you guys think? Also what determines how big a tomato will be?

To be honest I've never even looked at the pedicle, the stem that holds a blossom and the following fruit, to see if there is any correlation between the pedicle stem size and fruit size. I just plant my tomatoes and enjoy them and to date that's been over 2500 different varieties so I have had a lot of experience. The primarty determinate of the size of a tomato fruit for a given variety are the genes that it has, which is followed by many variables that can include where the tomatoes are being grown, in a goegraphic sense, how they're being grown, what amendments are being used and how often and last, but not least, what the weather is in any one season. But the genes of a specific variety are the most important in determining fruit size for any specific variety. Carolyn

The Peduncle and Pedicel that support the flower/fruit will grow along with the fruit if the genetics of the plant dictate and the cultural environment are conducive. In other words. The size of the stem that supports the fruit is nothing to worry about.
