Broken stems but growing plants - questions

Posted by bart1 6/7 Northern VA (My Page) on

Sometime in the last 5 days a few of my newly planted tomatoes were blown down and had their stems snapped Some of them look completely withered with flat leaves, but others have branches and leaves pointed towards the sky, and look fine.

Some only have a tiny piece of intact stem connecting the part laying flat on the ground to the roots, but the rest looks fine.

My question is, should I leave the healthy looking plants where they are or should I try to stake them back up?

Photo shows a healthy broken plant (left) and a deed broken plant (right).

The picture looks pretty dire...I would definitely pick up a few transplants at a nursery and start over. You could always leave the survivor be and see what it can do!

Your time and land is more valuable than a couple bucks per plant.

If it's a variety that you really want, you can stick the broken plant in water and it will form roots and can be re-planted later.

Our winds have been terrible so it's not a surprise that they have broken.

Don't even bother with the water, just stick it in the dirt where you want it to grow, and keep the soil moist. That way you won't have transplant shock. The roots a tomato grows when it is in water are different from the roots it grows when in soil, so rooting it directly in the soil saves the time required to adapt.
