| My sun gold plant has lost a lot of leaves due to early blight. It is otherwise healthy and producing fruit.
The tomatoes are terrible tasting - very sour, no sweetness at all. I am fertilizing with Tomato Tone and Miracle Gro for tomatoes like I always do. I am not overwatering and we have not had much rain. It's pretty hot here (high 80's to low 90's) and humid but the fruit is ripening evenly. Are my sun golds sour due to not enough leaves for photosynthesis to produce sugar? |

| Why are you using so much fertilizer? |

| I am growing in containers and it gets washed out from the watering fairly quickly. I am not over fertilizing. Plenty of blooms and the foliage was fine before the early blight hit the leaves. |

| Hi Yum, I'm not sure, and it would be hard to be sure without seeing the tomatoes or a good picture of them, but it sounds to me like you aren't letting them get ripe enought before eating them. It took a while for my grandkids to learn to let them get that deep rich gold color that tastes so good, rather than the paler yellow gold that can be pretty tart. Betsy |

| This is how they should look.

| natal pic gives you a good look at the color range they go through as the ripen - especially the bowl in the back on the right. Any hint of green or even the lighter colored gold ones need to ripen more. But indirectly yes, loss of leaves can affect flavor somewhat because of the increased sun exposure (and sun scald) it allows on the fruit. The higher internal temp it causes inside the fruit sort of 'cooks' the sugars changing the taste. Plus any plant that is stressed by disease has a compromised circulatory system and that too can affect flavor. Dave |

| I definitely left the fruit on the vine long enough to turn the deep gold color. |
|
| We might be missing the obvious here - are you sure that your seeds / plants are F1 Sungolds? Also there are many varieties that look like, but taste nothing like Sungolds. I've always found SG to be the most reliable tomato variety i've ever grown. IME they always tasted good no matter what. |

| My seeds came from TGS so yes, I believe they are. The first plant in the fall was fine as long as I didn't overwater. |
