starting tomatoes

Im have trouble with getting my tomatoes seeds to germintate. I tried using a float bed system the type used to start tobacco plants. My seeds either didnt come up or died shortly after. So i had to buy all my plants.
Im not ready to give up yet. I want to start some late tomato plants..........any advice, hate to buy more plants after ive already got seeds.
