Thoughts on culprit?

Awoke this morning to this! Yesterday was fine--watered it even. Could it be too much water? Other tomatoes fine. No appearance of critters--attached at roots without any indication that has been severed from below.

Another question: Did have one tomato and now a cucumber plant just vanish--no disturbance of root or severing, leaving behind any part of plant. Thoughts on that too? Urgh!

It might help to know the town or county where you live. Also, can you give us a general idea of what wildlife might come through your yard?

Did the tomato and cucumber which vanished do so since last night also? How large were they?

That kind of fast wilting is serious. Check the base of the plant throughly. Something got it! I saved the photo and flipped it around to see it better. It's not too much water, and not too little since you said you watered it yesterday. Plus, it's the only plant affected. My guess is some kind of bug got into it and possiblty drilled into the base of it somewhere. Unless you find the problem, will probably get worse before it gets better.

RE: Thoughts on culprit?...it was a gopher!

Upon closer look the stem below ground had been severed and I found the hole!! I live in an area rife with these pesky gophers. My two cats and my dog help out, but I guess not enough! Bummer.

If the roots were eaten, maybe a vole!
