a Newbie has some small tomatoes...

I planted these out early and babied them A LOT.

They now have some small tomatoes on 2 Riesentraube
plants.

I planted out about half of my plants early the rest over the weekend. (Too busy this weekend)

I have a few small tomatoes and some blooms on other varitites. I am so glad I picked out several different varitites so I have a better chance.

a lot can play a role. a few starter questions,

1. what variety are the small tomatoes?

2. are they in ground or pots? if pots what size?

3. when did they show signs of fruit and how long have they been the same "small size"?

4. do the plants looked stressed?

5. did you recently transplant them while they were blooming? could have stunted the growth

6. how much water are you giving them? over water can stunt growth.

i know its a lot of questions but you have left too many variables.

Dtray, I don't believe the OP is having a problem with small tomatoes(Riesentraube has small fruit), but is posting on her success.
Karendee, do post your other varieties and let us know how they do.

RE: a Newbie has some small tomatoes...

Sorry, I was posting on success. :) I was just happy to see tomatoes. The last 2 years have been very bad tomato years for me. Last year I only grew from seed and they never got going for me :(

This year I did some seeds and some transplants.

These are in the ground. I put them there 2 weeks ago. They were getting quite large for potted plants. I had repotted them once.

I also must add that I planted them with some of my vermicastings. (Worm poop) That stuff is like liquid gold.

Answers just in case you are wondering.

1. what variety are the small tomatoes?
Riesentraube
(a small chery size, early tomato)

2. are they in ground or pots? if pots what size?

In ground for almost 2 weeks now. I bought them in pots, transplanted them into bigger pots when I got home. Then I spent a couple weeks hardeing them off before going in the ground.

3. when did they show signs of fruit and how long have they been the same "small size"?

About one week ago I saw flowers and I let them go. I figured since I have way too many tomato plants letting some flower is a way I can get a few early ones.

I only noticed the tomatoes this week. I am not sure how long they have been there. (this is a cherry variety so they won't get too much bigger)

4. do the plants looked stressed?
The plants look happy to me. I have another that looks stressed but I assume it was because I did not cover it well for the cold.

5. did you recently transplant them while they were blooming? could have stunted the growth
I planted 2 and one had a bloom and I left it as a test.

6. how much water are you giving them? over water can stunt growth.

It has been ranining here so I rarely water.

I hope that leaving the blooms to make tomatoes was not a mistake on my part. However, I am learning so that is ok with me. I have 20 plants total and if these 2 have stunted growth that will be ok with me:)

Thanks for all the interest and offer to help!
