HELP!!! Something's eating our green tomatoes!

Posted by lolittakat none (My Page) on

We don't know much about gardening, but planted 2 tomatoes plants last year and had a huge success, never any issues. This year we planted 4 organic ones, but our largest bush is getting attacked by something :(
There are a couple of green tomatoes growing already, still pretty small, but all of them have gotten holes in them over the last week or so. All the other tomato plants and little green fruit seems fine. Why is this happening and how do we stop it?
Thank you!!

A caterpillar is doing that. Regular search-and-destroy forays work. Have to learn how to "see" the culprit.

Do you have crickets in your area? I have discovered that they love to eat tomato fruit. An insecticide that won't harm the plant would be my advice.

I use a BT spray once a week as soon as I start getting green tomatoes and that seems to prevent the caterpillars from eating them. The first year I grew tomatoes they ate holes in most of them but I've used the BT every year since with no problems. It is an organic pesticide that only works on caterpillars. The kind I buy is a concentrate that you mix with water. There is also a powder but I find it messy-looking and harder to apply than the spray.

You don't give any clues where you are located but I think I would look for birds or chipmunks in your garden. Try leaving out some water for them to drink?
