| This is the first year I have ordered heirloom seedlings (from a place recommended here) instead of buying them in local nurseries. They arrived looking just fine. I put them in shade for one day, then in half sun for another few until I could plant. I put them in the ground just under a week ago, and they're mostly looking terrible. Sorry these aren't the best photos - I can take more if need be.
It's been fairly cool and rainy here, so maybe this is the problem? I've never had trouble with planting tomatoes in the past, so I don't know what I've done wrong here. Any help appreciated! |
Follow-Up Postings:

| I think they are called "environmental" damage, more likely sun scald/burn. It happens when the plants are not hardened off properly. I will just clip those very lower leaves. |

| Agree that the second photo is all environmental damage from not being fully hardened off before planting. It should recover. The only thing that bothers me about the first photo is the black spots on the lower leaves. Those I would remove just in case. Dave |

| Also it looks like you are growing them in a raised bed. What is the soil made of? They could also use a 'little' fertilizer, they are looking a bit pale. They should survive...have seen much worse :-) |

| Top growth looks good. I snip off lower leaves that are touching the ground. Mulch with a light airy straw. They should recover if you get those leaves off the wet ground... not sure where in the zone you are but on the east coast we have been soaked for days. like mentioned above, they need to get used to where they are if not properly hardened off...just an adjustment time is needed and another week of patience. I've never ordered tom starts but must be such different growing conditions than where you are... |

| Thanks for the help! I trimmed off the damaged leaves, so they're looking leggy but better. Guess I need to harden off differently if I buy from this source again. Cheers! |
