Tomatoes in containers

I have decided to put my tomatoes in containers (approx. 15 gal nursery cans) this year. Should I make some exotic potting mix (like Al's 5-1-1)??? Or should I just stick to a "Miracle Gro" type store-bought mix? Question 2: do you tie your plants (soft ties) with one loop encompassing the stake and stem both...or tie stem separate...first stake then branch with another knot? thankyou...

Question2 - I use a figure 8 if I have to tie something to a stake. Tied separately it has some flexibility.

As to container mix - that is your choice. Both approaches have advocates, both are used by many, both work. Just make sure it is a soil-less mix and NOT MG Garden Soil. Some also report problems with the ones that have moisture control added to it although in your zone it may be handy.

Last year I did some containers and used Miracle Grow potting medium. At the end of the season cleaning up the pots I was shocked at the small root ball. No wonder they didn't produce well. This year I am using Al's 5-1-1. I was able To find all the ingredients and it was much less expensive to make! Last week I was given a plant to try, a " family heirloom". I had no more containers nor space to put another one, so I had to yank one my plants. I couldn't believe the well developed root system! So I am quite impressed with 5-1-1 over MG. I use Texas tomato cages so can't address the second question.

Ooh, now I am wondering if used MG moisture control or regular and I don't remember. I do like the 5-1-1 though.

The 511 mix definitely encourages root growth. Last year the roots went clear down throught the 511 mix and grew through the drain holes in the bottom and anchored the container to the ground.

5/1/1 is definitely something I want to try, as I have read the rave reviews! But I got lazy and ended up using MG mix in one container (a big Rubbermaid tub) and another bagged mix (jungle something?) in another. Both are thriving, and both have roots growing throughout the tubs and into the ground through the drain holes. So far so good!
