I posted this question a couple weeks ago in the Tomato Pest forum but did not get any replies so I'm hoping someone can help me out... here's my original post: I checked my garden this morning and found one stem completely wilted on an otherwise healthy tomato plant. When I looked further down the stem, I found this damage shown in the pic. I've grown tomatoes for years but this one is new to me, can anyone tell me what sort of pest did this? I ended up cutting the affected stem off, well below the site of the damage, but I don't know if that was enough....

Best guess - one of the many boring caterpillars. Tomato fruitworm will do something similar - the two dark spots further up the stem look just like the fruitworm entry hole and the frass created as he bored his way out. Most importantly, how is the plant now a couple of weeks later? If it survived and appears healthy I wouldn't worry about it. Dave

In the one experience I had with a stem borer, the stem above the hole remained very small in diameter and growth had slowed to almost nothing; that stem never recovered. I only saw one hole (neatly round), no frass, and when I removed the stem some weeks after noticing the problem, there was no worm in the tunnel; the tunnel was a few inches long and was above the hole. Perhaps mine was a different sort of caterpillar than yours.
