Herbicide damage?

Ive just moved into a new rented property with a large garden and found that some previous tenants planted some fruit bushes - raspberries, red currants etc. I noticed that the raspberry bushes looked weird and after some research and asking on the fruit forum, concluded that they are damaged by herbicide, possibly Roundup.

My question is, will this affect my tomatoes? Im planning to plant out this week and the plants are hardened off and ready. I have no idea when the herbicide was used, or even if it was used in the garden or if it was merely carried here by the wind. So far, none of the veg im growing show any signs of damage and neither have the tomato plants that have been hardening off in the garden for the last 2 weeks. The plot for the tomatoes are not close to the fruit bushes, probably about 20 - 30 meters away.

If it was roundup you are fine. Once it dries on the plant or hits the ground it has no effect anymore. If it was a broadleaf herbicide it could remain for a week or so depending on rainfall, ect.

Thanks very much. Ive just taken a look at my tomato seedlings again, and now im beginning to think that they have been affected too. Some of the lower leaves have white tips and edges which i thought were due to sun scald in the hardening off process. The new leaves have little to no damage.

If it is really herbicide damage, will the plants be permanent damaged that they wont produce or will they just outgrow it? They are growing fast now!

The damage to your leaves looks like sun damage like you said. IMO nothing to worry about.

Sun damage or not, stay as far away and keep your food as far away from glyphosate and any other evil Monsanto product as humanly possible. The fact of the matter is, we don't know the extent or range of damage glyphosate may cause. Hell, Monsanto doesn't even know.

I definitely agree with that but you can only control what you do - not what others do. My heart skipped a beat when i realised my little tomato plants could have been possibly irreversibly damaged from the act of someone else, completely beyond my control.

No, I know, I didn't mean to come across as shunning you or talking down on you. It's a shame that stuff is even legal for sale, is all. Stay healthy and good luck with your tomatoes! :)

No worries! I am hardly a fan of Monsanto to say the least and buy all my seeds from specialised online websites. :)

There are -- so far, at least -- only a handful of GMO crops, and no GMO seeds for sale to the home grower. Nor are there likely to be in the near future.

That's not to excuse Monsanto: merely my protest against seed ads I've seen online which imply a) only their site is a guarantee of non-GMO seed purity, and b) open-pollinated seeds are rare.
