I have a sick Big Beef Bonnie plant. Never tried to attach a pic to a post hope it displays the condition. Any help will be appreciated.

RE: Sick Tom

It got a blast of 2,4-D (lawn weed killer).

Tomatoes are sensitive to it. Generally it takes a couple of days after it was hit to show up unless the ester based 2,4-D was used (that could show in 12-24 hours). 2.4-D can blow for several miles if conditions are right but it was likely fairly close by.

The other outside possibility is some kind of virus like shoestring virus. But since this is the time of year people go nuts with weed killer I'd suspect it.

Look around the yard or along neighbors. See any redbud trees, roses or dandelions that show twisting or curling especially at the growing points? If so it was the 2,4-D.

It should grow out of it depending on how much of a dose they got. Whether or not the tomatoes from it are "safe" is debatable. The chemical probably will have metabolized by the time fruit mature. The first fruits may be misshapened some.

mulio.. Thanks for the help. This was the first plant in the bed and none of the other plants set out at a later date have problems.

RE: Sick Tom

You may have gotten lucky and the spraying was done before you planted the others. Hopefully there won't be any residual effects but it's always a possibility. I'd definitely be having a talk with my neighbors (if it was me) about the proper use of chemicals.

Unfortunately, many of my neighbors use lawn services and we have had constant high winds all spring. Makes me think you are correct about chemical drift.
