Yellowing new leaves and stems

Let me start by saying I am a newbie. I built 7 self-watering containers (14 and 18 gal.)in March, following the instructions for the Earthtainer (which were great). I used Fafard 52 Mix for growing media. I planted a 12" Sweet 100 on April 3 that is now almost 4' tall. I planted a 8" Early Girl at the same time, and it's about 3'. On April 8, I planted 3 small (6") heirlooms, a Cherokee Purple, a Sioux, and a Brandywine. Those 3 are now over 18" tall. They have all flourished. However, over the past 2 weeks, I've noticed most of the new growth on all of them is yellow. The first 2 weeks of growth were warm and dry, with lots of wind. The past 10 days have been cooler and very rainy with lot's of wind. I've always made sure they've had water.

What could be the problem? I've read that yellowing could be from over-watering, but they are in SWCs that take care of that. I also read it could be lack of oxygen to the roots. Could I have drilled my drain holes too close to soil platform? During one of the rainstorms, it rained heavy enough that water definitely got in the containers from the top. It was torrential. Could this have over-fertilized? Could it be anything else? I haven't used any herbicide since days before I planted.

Can I do anything to fix this, or are they doomed? That would be a bummer, because they've been doing so well. The Sweet 100 has about 10 small tomatoes on it.

Thanks for any information or help. This forum is wonderful.

self watering container doesnt mean that the watering will be perfect. unless you have the right mix. did you add any pelite, peatmoss or does that mix have any of those in it. try letting them dry out.

If you used a water soluble fertilizer and added enough for the entire season it very well could be from over-fertilizing. This is similar to what I'm seeing in some of my plants which I accidentally over-fertilized thanks to the cat and my negligence. After thoroughly flushing the media the color is coming back.

I fertilized with Tomato Tone along the perimeter of the containers. If this is the problem, how can I possibly flush a self-watering container? I am stumped.

Thanks for the input.

You'd have to pull the lid and use a water hose. You might also have to drill a few more drain holes which probably wouldn't be a bad idea anyway.
