Picking Cherry Tomatoes

I can afford to get 4 different types of cherry tomatoes next year (... already planning for next year...).

At the moment, I am looking at :

Black Cherry
Bing Cherry
Gold Nugget
Sakura Hybrid

Just wanted to see if anyone had their 2 cents, or had tried these and either loved or hated them. Thanks :)

The most important judge and decision maker should be YOU. If you like or dislike any of those, that is all it counts.

But speaking on those varieties , I have not grown any of those. The most popular cherry varieties are :
== Son Gold, Sun Sugar, Super 100, Black Cherry ( you have it), I have also heard the name "Gold Nugget".

I am growing 3 cherry types:

== Sun Gold, Husky Red, and an unknown from store bough heirloom fruit. It is on the larger side. All 3 are new to me too. So I will be the judge at the end of season too.

Are you growing in a greenhouse or using hydroponics? Reason I ask is Sakura is a GH/hydro variety. It will be a huge plant so plan support accordingly.

Bing Cherry is a pretty fruit while on the vine IMO and the flavor is ok but the one year I grew them for market I noticed that its uneven, mixed coloration when ripe didn't seem to appeal to many. I got lots of questions about what was wrong with them so gave up on them.

Gold Nugget is good but I think Sun Gold is better. If space is an issue then Sun Gold gets huge while Gold Nugget is a much smaller and compact plant.

Black Cherry I don't personally care for and am consistently disappointed in the taste. But many rave about it so give it a try and see if it appeals to you. Or take a look at Black Plum and see if it might appeal to you.

Enjoy your planning for next year. That is 1/2 the fun!

"Are you growing in a greenhouse or using hydroponics?"

Wasn't initially planning on it, but I have a greenhouse for winter crops (gets too cold here to just put them outside) with only about half the space filled up, so thanks for the warning! Hadn't seen that part of the label :)

Thank you for all your input. I grow non-GMO & organic so I will try to see if I can find Sun Gold. I'll look at others besides Bing.

Have a charmed day! - MD

RE: Picking Cherry Tomatoes

Hi just thought I'd add my two cents. I'm growing Sun Sugar which I prefer over Sun Gold but they are similar, sun sugar is a hybrid. I grew Gold Nugget last year and did not care for it, but again, it's a personal choice. I found the fruit split a great deal. Taste was so so for me. I do like Black Cherry and I'm growing Amys Apricot and Jaune Flamme this year for the first time so time will tell!
