I know it is possible to take cuttings from plants to root and make new plants. The storm last week snapped one of my ML's off right at the ground (it was still fairly small and hadn't gotten tied to its pole yet - bad us.) I'd like to take a cutting from one of the other plants to root and replace the one I lost. My question is: how big should the "donor" plant be before I cut off one of the suckers? Thanks,

Edie, sorry to hear about your plants. We watched the storm from down here in the Carolinas and thought some gardeners might have had some problems. Good news for your tomatoes: we root suckers all the time. Here's a page that explains how to do it. While we take suckers in the fall, you can do it any time. Good luck! http://www.tomatodirt.com/fall-tomato-cuttings.html

You want a sucker about 5-6" tall so you can have a good 2" of bare stem to bury in the potting mix. As soon as one develops to that size on the plant you can remove it for rooting. Dave

Thanks so much... at the rate the plants are growing I should be able to get something long enough in a couple of weeks. I appreciate the help. Yeah, that storm was a doozy. I consider us lucky to have just lost a tomato plant. There are plenty of folks around the area with tarps on roofs. Edie
