Folks on this site are very helpful to those needing answers and advice. But it can be frustrating to read a query without any idea of where the writer is located. If you indicate where you are--zone, state, town--you're likely to get more and better responses, especially from people living in the same area, even if it turns out to be simple commiseration ☺ You can add these details in your account setting.

I agree completely Gary. Such a reminder has been done here before but there's always new folks posting. It's especially important when it comes to Tomato diseases and pests since not all diseases and pests are found everywhere in a geographic sense. I go to someomes page and location may just say USA which is not at all helpful/ But that brings up another question I have. Why are folks posting about pests and Diseases in this general Forum when there's a link at the top to the Pest and disease Forum? Is there no one there answering questions? Spike, the original owner of GW, put up that Pest and Disease Forum so that there would be no questions about Diseases, etc, in this Forum. Same for the Seed Exchange Forum so that no questions, requests, etc., would appear here. I served my time in the Pest and Disease Foum answering questions for many many years as a few folks here know b/c they did as well, so hope that there are now others now helping out over there. So I seldom gget involved with disease questions here b'c I'd prefer to see them in the proper Forum, and lets be honest here, as I said, I served my time over there and I think it's time that some others do as well, but if they are, then why the questions here in this Forum? In any event if someone has a pest or disease or nutrional lack question, I'm sure the Problem Solver thread is still there and that's good place to start. I like TAMU and Cornell for tomato diseases. Carolyn

Zone 5b Here, I'm 6' tall Dark brown hair Male, Married. I enjoy Gardening and Golfing and Fishing. My wife and I are expecting our first child together in about a month and a half. I'm 32, she's 25 Yay for me. I like craft beer and good Scotch on occasion (nearly any occasion). I have gardened all my life, Though I really only started actually researching anything about a year ago. Before that I just did what I learned from mom, or other people who I had the occasion to spend time in the garden with. Politically I am most close to a Libertarian, I like personal responsibility and fiscal conservatism, though think people should make thier own choices and be able to do what they want save for damaging someone else's peace and property or doing injury or harm to someone. With that though, comes the responsibility to live (or die) with the consequences of your actions. If you get addicted to meth or crack, sorry, hope your family loves you and tries to save your butt. Religion wise, I do not follow any organized religion though I was confirmed roman catholic. I believe in a creator or some type of universal intelligence that might permeate the universe or something. I medetate often, and constantly try to make communication with another higher intelligence, unsuccsessfuly I might add, at least as Direct dialouge goes. I generally just think everything is interconnected and try to live in as much harmony as I can with the other beings around me, both human and non-human (except for slugs May they die in a salty tomb of woe). When I was younger I was a very good runner, both at distance runs and sprints. If I had gone to a bigger school, I think I would have made one heck of a decathelete. As it was I placed in invitatioinal meets in runs from 200M to the 2 mile, Long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus, shot put and 400 hurdles. My best mile time was 4:22 and my best 400M was 49 seconds. Hope this info helps! ;)

It sure does help Coconut head b'c knowing your background I can now match you with the most appropriate tomato varieties to grow. LOL Yes, I've been thinking of having my brother throw up a website for me where a series of questions would lead to matching with specific varieties. ( wink) And if you think I'm going to give as much info about myself as you just did, well, it isn't going to happen. LOL Yes, your info does help, as you asked. Carolyn

This is a Tomato forum, dealing with tomato issues. It seems perfectly logical to post questions regarding tomato disease problems. I sure trust what experienced tomato growers have to say about tomato diseases, and they are most likely to see it here first. Like going to a bone specialist instead of a general practitioner. I want to discuss with Tomato people not Weed people.

Yes, it is logical to ask questions about tomato diseases. My only point is that there's a separate Forum for doing that and the link is at the top of this page. Originally tomatoes were discussed in the vegetable forum and when tomato questions took up the bulk of that Forum Spike opened this general Tomato Forum. And when questions about tomato diseases started taking up a good number of posts in this general tomato forum, then Spike opened the Pest and disease Forum where those questions could go. And when there were so many questions in this general forum about seed wants and seed trades that's when Spike opened the current Seed Exchange Forum. It's just been a natural progression trying to open different and new tomato related forums to deal with different tomato issues. Same with the picture gallery for tomatoes, link at the top, where folks can post their pictures of tomatoes. Carolyn

That's the spirit, Coconut_Head! Plus your post led me, by a circuitous route, to my first exposure to Hügelkultur. I'm grateful for that.

Interesting! I'd love to see the pathway that you took to get from my post to Hugelkultur. It might not be coincidental that I did my very own first Hugelkultur bed this year. Permaculture fascinates me. Could be the libertarian in me. Self sufficiency and all that good jazz. My post was mainly in jest, but that is all me. I am always in favor of TMI than too little. And who knows, perhaps Carolyn can find me my Tomato Variety soul mate after all. CH

Desperate to know, in addition to your state of mind, what state you're gardening in, I did some...checking and, mirabile dictu, came across the Huegelkultur business. As I say, fascinating. Your tomato variety soulmate: How about this one: http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/wiki/Monkey_Ass Whatcha think, Carolyn?

I think people just forget, I finally put my zone in my profile, but zones don't give much more than growing season. Storms, lack of rain, etc are all local info that can be really helpful for the tomato detectives. As for the soul mate tomato, I fear I would always cheat, looking for something younger and prettier. ;)

Ohhhh! that monkey ass is going on the top of the grow list for next year. Thanks Gary! This is gonna be awesome!

A Twofer for Harvey and Coconut. Harvey, when trying to ID Pests and Tomato diseases zones do help b'c you're not going to find systemic diseases, nor certain pests in some zones. Otherwise, yes, local conditions are very important. As for your tomato soul mate, I can understand the younger part, but prettier than what or whom? LOL Coconut, MA is an inspired soul mate for you but I'm thinking of a couple of others that might be a match for you as well. When I have time I'll look around for at least one. As in match maker, match maker, make me a match...., from Fiddler on the Roof, one of my fave musicals with so many wonderful songs and lyrics. Carolyn

How do I get the zone to show automatically? It's on my Profile page, but whe I go to post, I have to type it in every time.

If I were a rich girl, deedle deedle deedle de, all day long I'd play among my plants, if I were a wealthy giiiiirl. O.k. quite enough of my singing. Carolyn, right now there is nothing more beautiful than a Black Krim, but just a few short years ago it was all Brandywines. I am so fickle :) Good point on the zones/diseases and pests.

I'd like to know that too, pluto. This Tomato Forum is very active, unlike a lot of other ones. If you want answers to your questions quickly, this is the way to go. Just my two cents. I agree about always remembering to include your zone.

pluto1415, try this: 1. At the very bottom of a page, click on "Member Pages" in the green bar. 2. If you are logged in, this should take you to your own member page. If not, I assume you'd need to log in. 3. Click on "Edit Your Membership Details." 4. The field you want is "Garden Zone." 5. Make any other changes you wish, then click "Save Your Member Profile."

It took me a loooong time to find it, garystpaul. I kept trying things that didn't work....
|
Yup - that's exactly where I have it filled in - yet (as you can see from this post), it does NOT automatically fill in my zone on each post (right now it up above the message box where I'm typing this in the Zone(optional) box, it says NONE).

Why are folks posting about pests and Diseases in this general Forum when there's a link at the top to the Pest and disease Forum? Is there no one there answering questions? Carolyn said: Carolyn, (btw, I'm a big fan of yours)in an ideal world every poster to the site would ask their diseases, etc. questions in the P & D Forum but in fact, it's not gonna happen. Most newcomers aren't even aware of it and until familiarizing oneself with the ins and outs of the Growing Tomatoes Forum, the questions will most likely originate hereno matter how many well intentioned reminders are posted. Now, off to explore further this intrigueing MonkeyAss variety ... ;-) Will and the Furry Ones in the OC

OK - for any others that are having problems getting their zone to display automatically - clear out your cookies on your browser. (I contacted Tech support and they couldn't reproduce the problem, they suggested clearing my cookies and that worked!)
|
I love cookies ----> YUM!!! @Coconut_Head - I'm going to have to plagiarise about 80% of your biography. I thought I was reading about myself there (but I'm zone 8b and expecting my first grandson).

My zone wasn't showing up automatically either after I followed "missingtheobvious" directions UNTIL I logged out & logged back in. I cleared my cache & that didn't work but logging out & back in did. FYI
