Help with my Ace 55

One of my ACE 55 plants is not doing well in my raised bed.

Here is a pic, I hope it can do justice as what I see.

This plant is about 50% shorter than the rest of the plants in my garden. The tops are all tiny leaves which curl up. Water is not an issue as I have been using the dipstick method and my beds are covered with weed screen. The stalk of the plant is about 1" thick. and all the bottom leaves look healthy and leafy, nice and big. Its the top. This plant is smallish. The blooms have not come out yet as you can see in the pic.

Also if you can see this pic, the leaves shown are not terminal or the top, these are pretty much the upper half of the plant.

Suggestions? Should I let it go, pull it, replace it with another?

That looks like typical herbicide damage to me. Are any other plants near it affected? Has any one sprayed any weed killers in the area? Or have you mulched with grass clippings that may have treated?

Cucumber mosaic virus can look very similar. Do you know if it is in your area? Your local extension office should be able to tell you if it is.

Ace 55 is a determinate variety, are you other plants indeterminate? If so that probably explains why the Ace is smallet than the others.

RE: Help with my Ace 55

I don't know what the problem is but I would wait and see what happens. The Ace 55 is listed as Indeterminate at Victory Seeds and Tomatofest but it could still be a more compact indeterminate. I am growing it for the first time this year and checked on it this morning. It is about mid sized compared to my others but nice and compact. Since my tomatoes have only been planted for about 2-3 weeks it is hard to determine how it should look at this point. But since it has set blossoms wait until they open. Unless you feel it is infected with anything that could affect other tomatoes I would leave it and see what happens. Leaf curl can occur from herbicides but also from climate like too much rain and cooler weather. You might try using a good fish fertilizer and see if that helps.

My Ace 55 (VF) are determinate, but I did some more research. I found several websites that list either Ace 55 or Ace 55 VF as determinate: Reimer Seeds, Growing Instructions by American-Farina Enterprises, Sustainable Seed Company, and one that lists it as semi-determinate (a name that can't be mentioned on GardenWeb) so they seem to be about 50/50 on the determinate or indeterminate with an occassional semi-determinate. Ace 55 was first listed in the Seed Saver's Exchange Yearbook in 1985 and since then one grower has listed it as semi-determinate, four as determinate and five as indeterminate with a majority of the listings not stating one way or the other.

So, I guess it could be either.... However I lean toward determinate since it is an old commercial variety and most of them were determinate for ease of harvesting over a short time span.

Yet another mater puzzler.

Thanks for the help. Gardadore: I will hit it with some fish stuff. No, I have not been using weed killer in that area or any area it could have blown. Betsy: At least I stumbled upon a mystery.

Since I am a newbie to this:
Does it really make a difference in growing determinate and indeterminate varieties?
What happens if you mix them up in your garden?

In that particular bed, I planted 2 x Black Krim (which are growing huge like bushes) and 2 x Ace 55. 1 Ace 55 is doing great. Big bush, already set tomatoes, etc.. The other is the little runt of the litter.

---Not throwing another loop, but maybe I mixed up my plants and this one is not ACE 55. (hehehe - ooops). Guess i will have to see what produces if anything. My main concern is to not have a diseased plant in the mix of my garden. I already have 1 plant with early blight. He is kept way away in a container from the others. I really don't know how he got blight either as I have kept him trim and clean.

RE: Help with my Ace 55

Here are some new pics I took last night (6/28/11).

Does anyone think that the leyland cypress is effecting the Ace 55? If you look to the left, thats a Black Krimm. Its doing really well, but does not share that same crippled leaf looking characteristic.
