Wild Sweetie / US Seed Sources?

Posted by lamb_abbey_orchards 5a : Midcoast Maine (My Page) on

I'm interested in adding an Australian currant tomato called Wild Sweetie to my garden next year but can't find any US sources for seed. Aside from Seed Savers (of which I'm not yet a member), are there any other US seed sources for this tomato?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

John

I think you'll have to check Seed Savers Exchange.

I already checked the SSE Yearbook and no listing for Wild Sweetie.

John, I assume it's a red currant variety unless you say otherwise, and I'm wondering how Wild Sweetie is different than the many known named and unnamed currant varieties that attracted you to that specific variety.

I just decided to do a Google Search and found a thread from the Aussie Forum here at GW from 2005 and Diggers in Austrailia was carrying it at that time.

However, the person asking about re is it a currant, is a person who has a seed business in Canada and I know the person., If you would like me to make a contact to see if he has any seeds please tell me so. He does not list them at his 2009 website.

Or I can give you the link to that Aussie thread and you can see if any of them are still online, or, you can try and contact Diggers in Australia, or go to the Cornucopia Forum here at GW and post your want in that forum where the Aussies post.

Probably the last option is the most reasonable wat to pursue this.

Carolyn:

Thanks for taking the time to look into this. I really appreciate it.

I'd like to get in touch with the person in Canada. If you wouldn't mind getting in touch with them to see if they've got seeds for this cultivar, I'd be most grateful.

I'm interested in this particular currant tomato simply on the basis of its write-up in Amy Goldman's Heirloom Tomato book. I'm sure there are many comparable cultivars out there, but I'd like to see if I can still get my hands on this particular one.

Thanks so much!

John, I will get in touch with him and see if he still has any seeds since the thread I referred to dates back to 2005 and he doesn't list it at his website.

And if he doesn't then I think you should go to the Aussie Forum here or elsewhere ( and I can help with that too) and ask.

I think it's problematic when varieties are included in a magazine article or book or in online articles and no source for the seeds are listed.

Carolyn, who will get back to you here in your thread and it may take a few days since he isn't always online where I have to contact him.

RE: Wild Sweetie / US Seed Sources?

John, he responded and said he does have a few seeds from 2005 that he was sent and never grew out after he found they were a currant variety b/c as with many of us he was concerned about X pollination and he's a commercial seller of seeds and prduces all his own seed.

He said he would send them to me.

So if you would please e-mail me at cmale@aol.com and give me your home address I'll send them on to you when I receive them.

Carolyn
