| If you were going to be stranded on a island, and could only take two tomato seeds or plants with you, which would you choose. Based on flavor and production. |

Pale Perfect Purple is a Tomato that tastes nice but is a Prolific producer. Neves Azorean Red is my Tops for Taste and is a moderate producer. I'm growing 20 different varieties this year and hope to have a new favorite. Jim |

| Dave, I think my two favorites are the one I'm eating right now and the one on the counter that I'm about to eat. :>) Ted |

| There is always the past threads for reference. But my faves change from year to year so I think its always fun when these kind of threads come along every year. So my two favs are my two faves from last year because I haven't had much to taste yet, but they are coming very soon. So my faves right now are Hungarian Oval and Russian Heart (aka Ukrainian Heart). Damon |

| Thanks for links Dave. I did do a search, but like Damon said some peoples favorites change as they try different varieties each year. |

| It does change from year to year. I'd normally always pick Cherokee Purple, but you said to consider production, so for me this year (and my spring harvest is just about over here in the desert) the winners are Goose Creek and Gardener's Delight. It surprises me that I chose a cherry type, but these have been scrumptious this year. Ted, which two did you eat? |

Cherokee purple to eat, but not grow. So... if on a deserted island I'd take a solar fire and some sort of prolific hybrid. :-) Wait! No... I'd take a solar fire and matt's wild cherry. Yum. |

| I couldn't answer your question because you didn't say where the island is. I live on the back end of Monterey Bay and it't kind of like living on islands that could be off the coast of Canada. If the island you have in mind is Hawaii, I don't have a clue. If the island is in the middle of Monterey Bay I would keep Large Red Cherry and Matina because they always come through with the weather we have around here and are early and good for a lot of things and they pump out tomatoes like you can't believe. And the volunteers from Large Red Cherry would transform a desert island to a jungle in 2 years. They aren't my favorite tomatoes- that's not what you asked- but they are good and you will have a bunch of them to go with whatever else you are eating on your island. On my island I'm growing 40 varieties in the garden and 4 on the deck. All new varieties for me this year, because I'm like you, I'm looking for my perfect tomato. In a few years I hope to be able to scale back and grow about 10 plants of tomatoes I like and that I'm pretty sure will do well HERE. I grew Aunt Gertie's Gold last year and it produced 2 tomatoes. One of them was probably the best tasting tomato I have ever eaten but I don't have the time and energy to plant a garden of 40 plants to get 80 tomatoes. |

| I really like my Paul Robesons. I also like my Green Giants. |

| After last years crop, I would have to say Paul Robeson and Green Giant. This year I am anxious to try Red Fig, Purple Dog Creek and Brad's Black Heart. |

| Aunt Gerties' Gold and Brandywine Pink (Sudduth's Strain) |

favs are bhn 589 and German red Strawberry.. I had to pick a hybrid and an Heirloom... Awesome tomato flavor with the right balance of acids. also canning these this year.. disappointment was Kelloggs..not enough acid,,typical of orange colored fruits..lil too sweet..for my taste. Olena Ukrainian..both plants suffered from some kind of disease..never produced. Happy Gardening |

| Cherokee Purple and if I could get enough seeds I would take Jet Star which does not breed true. I actually do 2 crops of Jet Star every year. But you must purchase real f1 seeds or it does not work. do not buy plants they are not f1. Jet star has won many many contests as best tomato and continues to win against all the modern hybrids. It is a great tomato with huge yield. CP tastes better than JS. CP has a great yield for me. the two plants grow very similar. |

For now I would say: German Red Strawberry and Aunt Ruby's German Green. But this is subject to change as the seasons go by and I grow more varieties. |

| There are two answers to this: A) if there is lots of food on the island, and I'm just looking for flavor: German strawberry and Paul Robeson B) if I'm needing the food source and want flavor, but need productivity: Kellogg's Breakfast and Black Cherry OR Stupice Cheers, LS |

| I actually do 2 crops of Jet Star every year. But you must purchase real f1 seeds or it does not work. do not buy plants they are not f1. **** I know Jet Star very well and think it's still one of the best of the Harris hybrids along with Supersonic and Moreton Hybrid. But your comment about plants being sold are not Jet Star F1 baffles me since only F1 seeds are sold for Jet Star and so any plants sold at retail are also F1 Jet Star. Carolyn |

| I discovered black tomatoes last year. So my favorites are Black Cherry & Black Seaman. However, I am trying all new varieties this year. |

Black Seaman and Gerties Gold. Gerties Gold has a beautiful interior and has a smooth texture and hints of mango/cantelope. |

| My favorites are Amish Paste for true, rich tomato flavor, versatility and production, and Black Krim for luscious, smoky, earthy flavor, earliness, crack resistance, and production. |
