A strange sighting this morning...

Wish I had a camera! I am at work and out in our parking lot are a couple of those little grassy islands surrounded by concrete berms. I happened to walk past one of them this morning and looked down, and in a little crack in one of the berms is a tiny (about 6" tall) but very healthy tomato plant! I couldn't believe my eyes and had to stop to double-check what I was seeing. Now, there is no way this little guy is going to make it there. Not only is the crack way too small to allow for stem growth but I'm sure in a day or so the property mgmt will spray it with weed killer. So on my way out tonight I am going to cut it off and stick it in a cup of water for the trip home, then put it in rooting medium just to see what happens. Wouldn't it be a hoot to actually get a tomato off of it down the road?!?

Why not? (Grin)

I'd be tempted to grab it as low down as possible and try pulling gently. You might get a few roots that way.

Good luck!

DD and I found 2 seedlings that looked like cucurbits from the cotyledons growing next to the curb in the cul de sac. Thought maybe someone spit out some watermelon seeds? We left them, figuring if it was a melon of some kind we could train the vines over the curb and get them to root in the dirt, no way to pull them out w/o killing them.

It will be interesting to see what comes of them.

Edie,
Better than "Cutting It Off", you can take a narrow screw driver or wire and fish it out with roots intact.

Well, I had to hurry up and get out there to beat the crew with the weedwhackers. I did manage to get quite a nice clump of roots at the bottom. So the whole thing is residing in a coffee cup of water until I get home. It's not drooping or anything so I have high hopes for the little guy! Thanks for the encouragement!! :^)

I found some kind of cucurbit seedling growing out of my front lawn. I'm guessing someone spit a melon seed there.

Tomatoes are hardy little buggers!

I hope I don't gross anyone out with this...

I work for a sewer company and you would not believe some of the places that tomatoes grow and do extremely well! Some really good looking tomatoes but we don't eat them! ;)

They grow on top of floating aerators, which is basically a big motor mounted on a float with a propeller that stirs the water.

They grow on bar screen rakes, which is even more amazing because the rake travels up and down from 40' to 100' at different sewer plants. They get sun for about ten minutes, then they travel down into the darkness for 5 to 10 minutes at a time.
