Overgrown Tomatoes

I have 10 cherry tomatoes growing in my vegetable garden. I left them untended while I was away for an extended period of time. When I came back, plants that were compact and pruned within their cages had overgrown and run together and now I have two rows of 5 plants all completely tangled with one another in massive dense clusters. Back when they were pruned I already had way too much fruit so I'm thinking of thinning it out and going down to 5 plants. If I cut off all but a few vines will the plant be OK? How drastic can I be?
