What's in your old topsy-turvy now?

I can't be the only one who so permanently attached their topsy turvy that it's not worth taking down to change the soil and try to wrestle another tomato plant into the darn thing. The last tomato I had in that thing looked sick, anyway, and I didn't want to mess with sterilizing it even if I could manage to UN-hang it.

Mine is Tradescantia central now, about 4 kinds which I keep chopping pieces off of to add to other pots. If I could stop doing that, they would trail down and cover it up...

What's that old T-T of yours doing this year?

its not what you can put in your topsey turvey its what you can put your topsey turvey in. (trash)

Hahahaaha a lot of my neighbors have those things but no one seems to have much success growing a substantial tomato plant in them. I think I'll "just say no"

I have a feeling the contents of my topsy turvey are disgusting since it has been at a landfill for two years....

Ha! I just got baling twine from my neighbor to string up my toms, she asked what I thought about those things - I was polite, but told her it seemed just as easy to run a string DOWN from whatever she was going to hang it from and just plant in the ground and train it to go up instead of hanging upside down in the sun and the wind drying out.

Ok yeah, that's the point. Nobody uses it more than once. If y'all have no input on the discussion I tried to start and would like to hijack this thread for another boring discussion on how these things suck for tomatoes instead, more power to ya. Get it out of your system. I think only 2 out of 4 people actually read what I said anyway.

 o
Sorry, misunderstood intent of thread

Oh, I read what you said but sorry don't have an old one with anything in it, so just added to the comments about not being good for anything. If you are looking for ideas for reuse, you could ask specifically what people thought might grow well in it, rather than asking what they have in it now since it seems 4 of us who read this thread don't have anything in one, and maybe others who read it didn't comment for the same reason.

But even if you start a new thread you may not get any useful responses.

Sorry, I thought you just wanted to start a chat, maybe get some funny responses (not mine). Didn't know you were looking for info.

My neighbor and also my sons gf seem to grow pretty nice toms in theirs. I used a 5 gallon bucket with a hole in the bottom a couple years back with success ,but for me I don't have a good place to hang it . If you put effort to keep them watered and fertilized they work .Its a good concept but doesn't hold enough growing medium so they need to be watered often, sometimes three or more times a day ,many are turned off by this ,or fail to do it . If you want to try it I suggest you use a 5 gallon or more bucket ,if you have a lid for the bucket, use it , put a large hole (an inch to two inches ),this will dramatically reduce watering as often, and much cheaper than a TT.

It works well as a chum basket for fishing. just add a few small slits here and there on the sides of the container and fill with fish guts, heads, etc, and dangle off the back of you boat.

Good luck.

The second year I was going to use it, I took it down to put in fresh soil, and the thing split open on the side, so it went on a trip to the trash.

The "bag" part fell apart! Literally disintegrated after a couple of years. The first season it was great for cherry tomatoes. Kind of messy to water, but overall an interesting garden novelty.

This is my first year trying one out just to see how it did. I may try it one more year with a more container oriented tomato (oops, did I mention i put an Early Girl in it?)
If that doesn't do much better, I'll have to come up with something else to experiment in it. I'm sure I can come up with some kind of trailing vine to plant.....

My MIL and I found a brand new one in a thrift store for a buck. I'm growing up a Mouse Melon (Mexican Sour Gherkin)to plant in it. She lives on Big Pine Key and between Key Deer and Iguana's stuff hangs from a tree or sits (raised) on her small deck.

This was a good laugh. My wife picked one up for me last year at 75% off. I did make two of my own out of 5 gal homer buckets. I produced maybe 4 tomatoes from both plants. Never again. Oh and by the way, the topsy turvy is still in the box. Guess it will be sold at my next garage sale.. hehehehe Good luck to whoever gets it.

I have had fine results with currant tomatoes, but still a piece of junk. They fall apart after one season, and who wants to reach 9 feet in the air to water a tomato twice a day?
