2010 Tomato Photos - Part 7

I'm not the only one for sure who has been enjoying the pics of all the fruit set coming in. Finally got some new recent pics of my garden and I figured I would use them to start off part 7 of this thread.

Once there are a decent number of pic-containing posts on this thread (at least 30) we can start Part 8.

To keep it easy on those with slow internet connection, please keep the images small (you can use a simple image editor to change the size, suggested 600px wide as a max)

For those who don't know how to post a photo -

First, upload your picture to a sever such as Photobucket, Flickr, etc (I sometimes use URLs to my Facebook photos). Copy the URL to your image (should start with http://). The URL should end in ".jpg" or another similar image extension - do not copy the URL from your address bar. That will just copy the link of the web page that contains your image. Right-click on the image to get the address of the image. Then post this code in the body of your reply message:

<img src="http://www.example.com/myimage.jpg">;

Of course, you replace my example.com address with the URL of the image.

And here are my recent pics all from June 15...

{{gwi:1347628}}
First Opalka

{{gwi:1347629}}
Sunflowers (giant grey stripe), popcorn (from a bag of Jolly Time from the grocery store), some of the cantaloupes, and plenty of weeds.

{{gwi:1347630}}
Spacemaster cucumbers (straw has fought the weeds fairly well)

{{gwi:1347632}}
NAR early fruitset, and happens to be a Cheshire catface if you see it the way I do.

{{gwi:1347634}}
Bhut Jolokias finally growing a little.

{{gwi:1347636}}
Indian Stripe fruit set

{{gwi:1347637}}
Sungold, which probably has 20x more blooms than all the other varieties and is getting huge already. And all those blooms or at least most of them are setting fruit.

OK so there are some of mine, now let's see yours....

    I posted this question on the previous part 6 of this thread but my entry was the last posting so i thought of re-posting it on the thread's part 7 entry, hope somebody could help...

    "I have 12 tomatoes in the ground: opalka, yellow pear, chocolate cherry, sweet 100, cherokee chocolate, kbx, cowlick's brandywine, big zac, box car willie, dr wyche's yellow, omar's lebanese and nar. as you can see, i've placed them in cages... do i still have to provide stakes for them or is the cage enough as a support? if i do have to provide a stake, which variety should i stake, or do i have to stake all of them? it'd be nice to know this early so i could provide the necessary stake support before they become bigger. also, which ones usually goes higher than 5'? i know yellow pear, chocolate cherry and sweet 100 does... how about the others? i only have a 5' cage, do i have to top them off when the time comes? thanks for any advice you can give, i'd greatly appreciate it."

    thanks again for any help...

    My tomatoes in SWC buckets are really putting on size, and there's lots of fruitset including Stupice, Bloody Butcher, Sungold, SuperSweet100, Yellow Pear, Black Cherry, Polish Dwarf and the mutant Potato Leaf Early Girl:

    Here in IL, I have fruit set!

    First, the bucket garden - there are 23 tomatoes in total here, although a few are cut off in this picture.

    Here are some baby Japanese Black Triefle:

    Here is Amish Paste:

    Black from Tula:

    and the very beginnings of some Opalka:

    Here are some pictures as of today 6/19. The plants have been in the ground for about 4 weeks.

    First try with Earthtainers. Kosovo plants on the left and Opalka plants on the right.

    Flower cluster on a Matina plant. Hopefully those fruit set and the blossoms don't just drop.

    Indian Stripe has a bunch of flowers.

    Fruit set on NAR.

    I was able to take this photo tonight of my harvest.
    {{gwi:2104358}}
    When I started the season I had no idea what an heirloom was, and I had only transplanted 4 tomato plants the previous year. I am very satisfied with how this year has turned out. I am growing in a humid, hot, bug and disease infested area, plus I choose to grow organic. My losses have been very little. I don't know how much longer I will get to harvest, but I am very thankful for what I have been able to get. I wish everyone a harvest you can be happy with and enjoy.

    A couple from last night taken with my cell phone...

    {{gwi:2104359}}
    Brandywine Sudduths (not bad production so far, they're earlier than the Aunt Gerties Gold)

    {{gwi:2104360}}
    Sungold...a very very small fraction of 2 plants which are gargantuan already and probably have more than 200 flowers/fruit set.
    (yes that's a "no roundup please" sign since it's in a community garden with uneducated growers who don't know about herbicide drift...)

    {{gwi:2104361}}
    First butternut squash, so far I have 6 or 7 fruit set which is much better production than I expected and it's only late June.

    Bloody Butchers are starting to ripen in numbers:

    Here's the fruit on an unknown PL (was supposed to be Early Girl). It looks kind of heart shaped, the upper fruit are more round:

    In ground tomato patches look good, expecting fruitset soon:

    The Sungold in my SWC prototype with shutoff valve is doing really well, but I really need to get the mulch cover on. Rattail radish in middle is making lots of tasty pods:
    {{gwi:2104383}}

    I segregated this Supersweet100 to the Cucumber row due to suspected Early Blight, but it seems OK:
    {{gwi:46039}}

    Tomatoes in 18 gallon SWCs are doing OK, but seem to be more leggy than their inground counterparts. They went in a little later and may no be getting as much sun:

    I got lucky this year somehow. Too many Amana orange and a satisfactory # of Brandywine OTV. '1884' had some uneven ripening problems but the extended cold period this past winter stunted the plants initial green stage. I was figuring really pushing it towards July but the plants kicked in right to the wire with the tomatoes getting large enough before ripening. Also, very little problems with insects this year so perhaps they got a late start as well. Plants reached excess of 8ft, with many tomatoes exceeding 1lb each and just as pretty as a picture. Keeping the earthtainer containers fully hydrated at all times, seems to have helped avoid cracking.

    Amana Orange-Mid-Late May

    Here is a ripe Amana. People at work raved about these for a salad tomato.

    THe potato leafed Brandywine OTV

    A ripe and sliced Brandywine. If I could grow only one tomato, this one would have to be it. Talk about the best tomato sandwiches or just as it sits in the picture and all nearly perfect fruits of consistent upper quality. My neighbor, an elderly gentleman, swears this is one of the best he has ever eaten. You'd have to do some serious side by

    I spent some time reorganizing the tomatoes - I realized I had about 5 that were getting very little sun, do to an overhang. Plus, this new lay out gives me much better access.

    Here's another view - sadly, in front is an all but dead Paul Robeson. It ended up with WAY too much water, and it was a plant under the overhang. I think it got a lot of water off the roof, and then I was being a dork and watering it even more. I drilled lots of holes in the side of the container, but the darn thing just isn't draining. Last night, as a last ditch effort, I stirred up the dirt as much as I could in the container.

    My BER probably on my Stupice seems to be over, thanks to fertilizing and a water meter. Sorry that the only thing out of focus in this pic are the darn tomatoes. :) The plant is totally covered right now.

    The Sun Gold I found on craigslist is now a mini jungle, full of these:

    Last, but not least, Zogola - the fruit is so pretty and shiny!

    Early Girl Tomato that is producing great....

  • budge_grow
    13 years ago

    My plants looked pretty sickly when I put them in May 21st

    1st.

    Forty days later, my EarthTainer plants will soon spill over the top ring of upside down tomato cages zip tied on top of two cages per Tainer stuck in the potting mix. Should I prune out some of this jungle? 31 gallons of Mircle Grow Potting Mix (not potting soil) in each container mixed with 3 cups dolomite lime, 1 cup epsom salts, 2 cups Tomato Tone, 2 cups kelp meal and 2 cups earthworm castings, what some might consider egregious overkill in the fertilizer department and I usually wind up killing everything with kindness. Lucky me the tomatoes will tolerate it

    Four EarthTainers jammed together in one of the few areas in my tiny garden that gets full sun. Though the one broad side of each Tainer and the eight plants in them are without sun on that side due to the proximity of the Tainers, each plant is loaded with flowers and marble size tomatoes.

    Park's "Whopper", listed as 72 days to harvest, after just 40 days. It beats to harvest even Early Girl listed as 59 days to harvest.

    This is my first year growing tomatoes (or any veggies tbh), and so far so good, I reckon. None ripe yet, but growing big and good so far.

    {{gwi:2104425}}
    This is a variety by Suntory called "Rosso Rosso", allegedly. Those are the two biggest ones, about the size of my fist. Several fruits on that plant of varying sizes.

    {{gwi:2104426}}
    I bought the Rosso Rosso and this as transplants from the local garden center. This one was just labelled "tomato", was 68yen (about 77 cents US). So I dunno what variety it is. Nothing exotic, I reckon! It started off pretty sickly and I almost pulled it out and replaced it, but it's perked up quite well, and is like, 6 feet tall now, soooo :D

    I'm really excited for them to start ripening.

    These are mostly RossoRosso (since they all matured quite a bit earlier). The one on the bottom left is the aforementioned "tomato", whatever it is. None of them have turned red, but rather pastel pinky orange. Not sure if it's the heat or the variety. (shrug)

    The tiny RossoRosso are from the same plant as the giant top-left RossoRosso. Not sure why they're so small, but that's just the lowest branch. All the rest have big normal sized tomatoes (shrug). They're yummy though :D

    My container garden has been extremely productive! July has overwhelmed me with tomatoes all month longÂ.so much that I canÂt keep up anymoreÂitÂs just pound after pound of never-ending tomatoes, LOL!
