My container Determinate tomatos have a long thin (about 1 in) yellow beetle with black spots on it's back. Is this a tomato beetle?

Tomato beetle? Sorry I have never heard of of a tomato beetle.

Without seeing a picture all anyone can do is guess but long yellow with black spots sounds like a soldier beetle - a good guy. Check out the many yellow beetle photos below.

Is there just 1? Are there any signs of damage to the plant? If not then he is just passing through looking for aphids to eat and of no concern.

oops! Thanks for calling that to my attention. Apoliogies. here is the correct link.

Another possibility I thought of is the young bean beetle.

Dave,

Somehow my response got lost. I checked out the pictures and yes I think it is the soldier beetle. I do have the beginnings of something eating the lower leaves in long narrow paths. I have issues with my camera right now so I can't post pics.

Now I have to try and figure out if it's slugs or another culprit eating the leaves. I have mulched with coffee grounds and egg shells which is working on keeping the buggers off my other plants.

They were doing so well and so healthy looking without any pest problems up until now too.
