I finally got the garden of my dreams: 4 raised beds filled with a blend of purchased topsoil & compost, plus some smaller ones to use up the remaining soil/compost. Now that I have my precious transplants and seeds in the ground, I am noticing all kinds of troubling things:

The new leaves and buds on my tomatoes are so curled they look more like garlic snapes then leaves. My peas never grew well, many never made it past 2" tall, and the ones that have grown all have curled leaves - I may get a couple of peas off of 27 sprouts. The beans I planted came up either without any leaves, or with severely mottled leaves. My potatoes were doing fine for several weeks, but now the new leaves are curling up also. squash and cucumbers sprouts came up looking a little scorched around the edges and haven't grown much more.

Here's what I know: from what I've read it could be residual herbicides in my new compost (I just started a bioassay test), it could be herbicide drift (the lawns in my urban neighborhood are impossibly green and weed-free, so that's possible), it could be curly top virus although I haven't noticed any purpling of the leaf veins or yellowing of any leaves yet, and I just home-tested the soil last night and it showed that my Phosphorous is "very low." Also, our weather this spring has swung back and forth between cool/wet & hot/dry, with little in between.

I'm posting this in the Tomato forum because like most people, those are the most precious plants in my garden. Looking at my pictures, does anyone have any experience with this combo of symptoms? Any thoughts on how I can salvage what's left (I'll even repot them if that would help)? On the off chance they'll come out of it, I'm not pulling anything out until it's dead, and I just sprayed with a kelp foliar spray the other night to help them out. I plan on adding some P (any advice on best methods?). I'm willing to do whatever I can - too much time & money has gone into it this spring to give up!

Mine were hit with it this year. Mine have almost fully recovered and are blooming like mad.

You can either verify or rule out the compost by running a test. You will need 6 small pots. In 3 of them, start a pea seed in each using only potting mix as a medium. In the other 3 pots start a pea seed in each using a mixture of 2/3 compost and 1/3 potting mix. Grow them indoors. The control group (potting mix only) should be fine. If the compost is the issue, you will see it in the other group.

I am betting it is drift though.
