Hi people,, Im new in growing tomatoes, I recently got a tomato plant and planted on my back yard, it is located in a very sunny place, at the beginning the tomato was doing great, some flowers came, and even some fruit,,, but one week ago it started to dry, I have been watering the plant regularly, almost everyday. The only thing that have change is the sun, well, down here in florida is really hot, and we are having really high temperatures,,, Anyway I hope you guys can help me to save my tomato, there are some fruits still growing there, and I wouldn't like to lose them.

RE: Tomatoes dying

It could be a number of things. You might be over watering. Do you check the ground below the surface to see if it is dry? If it is not dry a little ways under the surface of the ground you could be killing off the roots which is often why all too seemingly healthy plants (tomato or other) start to fall off suddenly and unexpectedly.

It could unfortunately also be blight.

When you water the tomatoes, do you let the water splash up or do lay a hose down on the ground?

If you are letting it splash you should stop that immediately and lay the hose down on ground to let the water flow over it. There are number of issues created by letting the soil splash up on the tomato. Also if you have been touching the soil around the base wash your hands before you touch the plant.

It could also be a sunburn but since it is more established part of the leaves that look bad I doubt it is a sunburn.

This may be old news to you but it is often the source of problems. I am by no means an expert gardener but these are few lessons I have learned along the way.

Here is a link that another has referred me to as well. It might prove helpful.

Also, posting and reading around on the tomato pest and disease forum could get you some interesting results. as well. Here is the link to that forum as well: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/tompests/

Good luck!

RE: Tomatoes dying

In Florida this is not tomato season. Most tomatoes will not set fruit at these temps. Cherry tomatoes and special heat setting varieties will continue to struggle and produce in the summer. Nematodes become active in the summer also. Disease isalways a problem in FL.

I'm not saying you can't possibly get your tomato to produce just that it is normal that it is having a lot of problems this time of year.
