Choc Cherry, Big Beef and Cherokee Purple 28 days after plant out. Estlers ML, Bearclaw, Mr Stripey, Pineapple, Hillbilly, Parks Whopper...haven't seen any yet. Plants avg about 30 inches and all have blooms esp the CP. Wow! Lot of tying ahead for several weeks...81 plants. Weather has been good so far. 40% chance most of next wk so cloudy for several days maybe. I also have squash, zuchinni, bell peppers, sweet banana, egg plant, cucumbers, 12in corn and 3in corn, kohlrabi and a 40ft row of half runner beans. I live for this time of yr. By the time the thrill is wearing off alittle college football is cranking up so I'm good till Christmas. Then I'll have the blues and resort to reading whodunits.

Just curious... I've been a member (have an account) for years but just now started posting. When posters say they have in the upward of 10+ tomato plants and harvesting pounds a day - do they sell the fruits to the farmer's market or something? It's great, just wonder what to do with pounds of tomatoes a day. Great problem to have.

Yeah, best time of the year- waiting for first tomato!
I too have nearly 100 plants, lots of canning, some goes to friends and family, some to feed coworkers, some to local food kitchen. Great problem to have for sure.

According to a study, it will take about 8 days from bloom to setting fruit. And it will take about 38 more days to a red/ripe tomato (total 46 days from flower to ripe fruit).
Obviously growing conditions and variety may change those numbers.
BTW: The study had been done on some kind of beef steak.

Below is a link to the timeline being referred to. it doesn't have all the info that the original did since it was captured via the way back site.

And yes, it was a beefsteak variety but I've forgotten which one.

It was done by Paul, who used to be a member here at GW and it was he who uploaded all the pictures and text for the several FAQ's that several of us participated in quite a few years ago. Yours truly was the coordinater of the project but didn't have the smarts to upload everything.

Yes I got my info from the same thread. It is a brief pictorial timeline, nevertheless very useful. I have no idea about its accuracy though. But I just take its numbers as ball park figures. Obviously a small fruiting or cherry tomato is not going to act like a beef steak.

One more thing. I seeded all of these except for the Big Beef the second day of April so allowing 5-6 days for germination the plants are several days shy of two months old. Seems like I've had fair luck so far.
