 o
Odd Sungold problem

I'm having a great year for tomatoes, but now that they're ripening I'm encountering a weird issue with Sungold cherries splitting after I pick them. I'm tried pinching a bit of the stem off so I'm not tearing anything, but I'll look down in my basket after picking a bunch and inevitably a good handful have split. The plants look healthy, soil is evenly moist and mulched, and nothing is splitting on the vine. Barring water issues, would picking Sungolds when they're slightly underripe (yellowish-orange instead of perfectly orange) help prevent this? I'm growing other tomato varieties, but I haven't seen this issue with them.

You could try picking them earlier. Sometimes, I find fruit on certain plants, at certain times of the year, reluctant to release from their stems without potential bruising. Then, I get the clippers out and snip the stem just above the tomato.

I have grown several varieties of yellow cherries and they all tended to split when picked ripe. I think it is just how they are. Eat 'em quick.....

Try Sun Sugar. It's a very similar variety with less tendency to split.
