| Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew how I would go about making a mom tomato plant, like to take cuttings from. I hate growing from seeds for some reason, plus it's a lot cheaper and easier to just take a cutting off a plant when I want a new one because it's free.
How would I make sure my tomato plant is female... is this really important? I read somewhere else that there are no male or females in tomatoes, but I find that hard to believe. Do I need to keep it in vegetative state? Should I keep it indoors under a fluorescent light 24/7? I though that would stop the plant from flowering, but I am not really sure. I saw another post where someone asked about keeping a plant in vegetative state and no one really gave a definite answer, just wondered why someone would want to do such a thing. I'm new to gardening, so I would appreciate any help I can get, thanks. :) |

| All Toms have both Reproductive parts ,they are self pollinating ,you only need one Tom plant to get baby toms. You can take a cutting and grow a new IDENTICAL (clone) plant. If you search on the site for clowning you will find it or maybe someone will help you. As simple as cut and plant i believe |

| Tomatos are tough, just cut off a branch [sucker] stick in moist ground and step away and leave along. I'm sure others think that I'm nuts but cuttings have never produced for me, even thou the plant looks good. It could be because of where I live in South Fl. When I break off a nice sucker I try it, it grows well but its probally because of the time I stuck it. There easy to grow. Good luck. Plant em if you got em. Sam |

| Just place your prunings in a glass of water and wait a week. You'll have roots and a new plant. Just did it with chocolate cherry maters. Keski |

| One time I took a pruning from a cherry tomato and planted it in a small container. in the fall I moved it to a sunny window. It flowered in December and by new years I had 2 ripe cherry tomatoes. I picked them on new years day so I could say I had the 1st ripe tomato of the year. |

| As far as I understand, a tomato flower is basically a female flower wrapped with a male flower, so it is an all-in-one. Unlike some uhhhh, other stuff, there are no male or female plants. I don't believe tomatoes are photoperiod sensitive for their reproductive cycle, but they do need a minimum amount of light to do well, and I assume they need darkness for at least a couple hours a night. I am in the process of growing cuttings off Black Cherry and Red Currant. Only cuttings from indeterminate plants will grow a new plant, the nature of determinates makes them unsuitable. Make sure you root a growing tip, not just a set of leaves. |

| Also, cut off any flowers that might be on the sucker you are rooting(without cutting off the growing tip). You don't have to do anything to make it a 'mother' plant, other than making sure it's an indeterminate variety. |

| Thanks for all the help. I think I am going to try sticking the cuttings in a glass of water. I tried peat pellets and they rooted but never really flourished after that. |
