Question about adding soil to bucket

I'm growing a couple tomatoes in 5 gallon food-grade buckets. I used home-grown compost for them, and when I planted them the soil was about 3/4ths of the way up the bucket. But now, it's only half way up. Should I removed the lower limbs and put more soil in, or is it too late? The cherry tomatoes are about 18"-24" tall.
Thanks.

Yes, you can keep adding soil, not a problem. They'll appreciate the added opportunity to add more new roots to support all that top growth.

Fill it up to the brim of the bucket to give the plant the best chance. Why grow it in only 3 gallons when you can at least give it 4.5 gallons.

I had the same question, but my plants are between 3-4 feet tall in 22 gallon containers. I was surprised at how much potting soil settled. Will additional roots form on more mature stems?

But I should pinch off the stems that will be under the new soil, right?

You can but you don't have to for any reason. Less chance of injury to the plant if you just leave them alone.
