storage bin tomatoes

After a few years growing peppers in containers, decided to add 2 tomato plants this year. Didn't do my homework. Didn't get good container varieties, and my containers are too small -- maybe 3 gallons? The plants now appear to be root bound. I have some fruit, but many blossoms have produced *tiny* tomatoes that aren't getting bigger. One of the plants is pushing 6 feet tall, the other is nearly 5. I'm considering trying to transplant both into an 18 gallon storage bin, which could be tricky to do without damaging the plants.

Building a self-watering container isn't in the cards this year, although I'll do it next year. Anything wrong with just drilling some drain holes and filling the bin with potting mix and perlite? Thoughts?

Thanks!
