Picking Black Prince

My pipe-grown Black Prince seems to be doing fine...a little less aggressive than the Beefmaster. My biggest BP is just smaller than a baseball and is brownish-red with some green overtones around the top. Is this ready to pick??? thankyou (do not know how to share pic)

The best way to tell when a black when ripe (or other than red if you are unsure of when it is ripe) tomato is ready to eat, is to get touchy-feely with it. When you give it a gentle squeeze, it will give some when it is ripe. You might have to experiment a bit to find the amount of "give" that has the best flavor for you.

It doesn't sound as if it is fully ripe yet but can't say without seeing it. But as with any other variety as soon as it shows any color you can pick it and let it finish ripening indoors out of the weather and away from the bugs. Then as Bets said, you go by feel.

great ideas....thinking it is not ripe as long as I can see the slight area of green. Like the reds...wont this green area disappear when ripe?

Some black tomatoes keep the green on top. I have grown BP but I forget. Go by the touch method described.
