Chocolate Cherry Tomato Pruning

VeggieEddie

I am quite new to tomato growing and I am trying the Chocolate Cherry among others. Unlike the other varieties, which have one stem, my Chocolate Cherry plant has 3 or 4 large stems growing from the root in addition to the main stem. Is this normal for this variety or do these need to be cut. If cut should they be cut a little above ground to stop any disease getting into the cut ?
Many thanks
