can shade panels help in the summer?

I am gardening on country property near Mathis Tx south of San Antonio. Temps for the high often run over 100 deg. A few days ago it hit 115 In the shade. I have planted mostly hazelfield farm red tomatoes as they take a lot of heat. In such heat even they have stopped fruiting. But I am wondering if I could keep them alive and somewhat healthy so they can produce again in the fall by putting up shade cloth canopies. I can get 10x20. 70% blockage shade panels for $103.00 plus 6 t-posts for each panel. Not so cheap. And would provide shade for other shade loving plants too. There are few trees and none to provide mid-day shade. Advice?
